Job Description

Position Title: Test Automation Engineer

Reports to: Engineering Lead

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Location : DMV area, hybrid – primarily remote with in-person client engagement as needed

Travel Requirements: Occasional travel within the DC-metro area for customer engagements and team on-sites

Position Summary

The Test Automation Engineer owns the automated test coverage that lets CloudAI release with confidence. The role designs and builds test suites across the stack, from unit and component tests in Angular through API and contract tests to end-to-end user journeys, and wires them into the pipelines that run them on every change. The engineer treats test code as production code, keeps the suite fast and trustworthy, and works with developers to make quality a property of how the team builds rather than a stage at the end.

Key Responsibilities

Build and maintain automated test coverage across the stack.

• Design and implement end-to-end test suites for Angular and other modern front-end applications, using Cypress, Playwright, or equivalent.
• Build component and unit test coverage in partnership with developers, using Jest, Jasmine, or Karma.
• Build API and contract test coverage for REST and GraphQL services, including negative cases, authorization paths, and schema change detection.
• Implement accessibility, cross-browser, and performance testing appropriate to the application and its compliance obligations.

Keep the suite fast, stable, and trusted.

• Design test architecture that resists brittleness, including page object or screenplay patterns, stable selectors, test data management, and environment isolation.
• Diagnose and eliminate flaky tests rather than retrying or disabling them.
• Keep execution time within limits the team will tolerate, using parallelization and selective execution.
• Maintain the suite as the application evolves so that a red build means something.

Wire quality into the delivery pipeline.

• Integrate test execution into CI/CD with quality gates, coverage thresholds, and reporting that makes a failure immediately actionable.
• Build and maintain test environments and test data, including seeding, masking, and reset.
• Report on quality trends, including defect escape rate, coverage, and suite health.

Work as part of the delivery team.

• Participate in refinement and design, and define acceptance criteria that are testable before development starts.
• Perform exploratory and manual testing where automation is not the right tool, and support user acceptance testing.
• Coach developers on writing testable code and maintaining coverage as they build.

Technical Competencies

• Test automation for modern front-end frameworks, with depth in Angular and working knowledge of React or Vue.
• Automation frameworks and tooling, including Cypress, Playwright, Selenium or WebDriver, Jest, Jasmine, Karma, and behavior-driven tooling such as Cucumber.
• API testing, including REST and GraphQL, contract testing, and tooling such as Postman or REST Assured.
• Programming in TypeScript or JavaScript, with working ability in at least one of Python, Java, or C#.
• CI/CD integration and test reporting, using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or GitLab.
• Accessibility testing against WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508, using axe or equivalent tooling.
• Test design practice, including risk-based prioritization, boundary analysis, test data strategy, and defect analysis.

Education & Experience Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Five (5) years of experience in test automation for web applications.
• Demonstrated experience building an automated test suite from scratch and maintaining it through multiple release cycles.
• Demonstrated experience automating tests for Angular applications.
• Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines with enforced quality gates.
• Experience with API and contract testing for REST or GraphQL services.
• Experience with accessibility testing preferred.
• Experience with public sector, SLED (state, local, and education), or higher-education clients preferred, not required.
• Must physically reside in the United States and be authorized to work in the United States. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is not required.

Certifications

• No certification required for this role.
• Testing certification preferred (e.g., ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation or Advanced Level).
