Pharmacy Manager

Job Function Summary Involves all aspects of the medication use process, including procurement, prescribing, compounding, dispensing, storage of medications, administration and monitoring. Partners with physicians and other clinicians to provide treatments and advice to patients, records patient history relating to medication use and ensures the safe and secure storage of medications and related supplies. Advises physicians in determining the best possible treatments for specific diseases, stays current on pharmacy regulations, treatments and developments in research and design. Pharmacists are the experts on drug therapy and the primary health professionals who optimize use of medication for the benefit of the patients. Meets educational needs of patients, healthcare team, students and residents. Ensures adherence to regulatory and fiscal requirements. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets. Custom Scope Manages pharmacy operations to achieve quality, service, and productivity objectives. Ensures staff adheres to internal policy and external regulations for the medication use process, including prescribing, drug preparation, storage, dispensing, administration and monitoring. Key Responsibilities % of time Key Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions 50 Operations: Supervises the operation of the specialty pharmacy, including drug distribution and clinical activities Performs compliance audits on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with the Federal, State, and Medical Center policies Monitors the departmental quality assurance program and facilitates response/ solution to quality assurance issues. Develops work schedules, processes payroll, and ensures accuracy of timecards 10 Medical Care and Patient Responsiveness: Represents the department in interaction with Medical Center personnel, community groups, other healthcare organizations, and through active participation in committees, task forces, etc. when appropriate or assigned. Coordinates problem-solving efforts with patient care providers to assure standards for service and quality Responsive to patients, parents and visitors by assuring that services are provided in a timely manner with courtesy and compassion within a positive environmental setting Assures continuity of department operations by coordinating the pharmacist/technical support Participates in developmentment of departmental policies/procedures and goals/objectives that are consistent with those of the Medical Center and Campus organizations. 10 Communications Meets regularly with all department members and provides information and updates on Medical Center/department activities Exercises sound judgment in advising administrators, department manager, etc. on key issues 10 Leadership: Serves as a role model for personnel through management practices of honesty, integrity, and fairness Promotes teamwork by encouraging personnel participation in departmental activities, by enhancing their awareness and knowledge of the Medical Center’s objectives Maintains an open-door policy with demonstrated responsiveness, flexibility, and support of employees. Participates actively with other departmental supervisors and managers in addressing medical center-wide issues Serves as an alternate leader when other Outpatient Managers are not available (e.g. PTO, LOA, Sick, etc..) 5 Staff Development and Employee Relations: Establishes departmental standards and assures that employees are informed of these and of the expectation of compliance Responsible for training and monitoring employees’ work performance against job criteria; assist with the timely formal performance appraisal of employees 10 Financial Management: Participates in the development of the annual operational budget, monitors and controls expenditure level to assure compliance with the approved budget Assesses departmental productivity and appropriately revises workflow systems to enhance efficiency in providing services Assists administration in identifying revenue enhancement opportunities 5 Performs all duties and responsibilities of Staff pharmacist as appropriate or when needed. 100% Required Qualifications: Demonstrates subject matter knowledge of industry best practices in specialty pharmacy. Stays updated on pharmacy regulations and standards. Knowledge of all pharmacy federal and state laws and regulations. Recent leadership experience with exposure to training and guiding employees on technical skills in specialty area. Motivates and inspires staff to improve quality and services. Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment. Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner. Ability to apply policy knowledge to identify productivity inefficiencies and compliance risks. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, patients, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff. Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve patient problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process. Ability to listen actively to clinical staff and patients, understanding varying viewpoints and receiving feedback. Verbal and written communication skills to tactfully articulate reasoning behind own opinions and change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from others. At least 5 years of retail pharmacy experience and 2 years of management experience Preferred Qualifications: Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology and train others to effectively use applications. At least 3 years of specialty pharmacy experience Education: Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent training.
