Environmental Technician - San Diego, California - $28 to $33/hr - 1st Shift
This role supports the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department with a primary focus on hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, inspections, reporting, and employee safety training. The Environmental Technician works closely with the EHS Manager to ensure operations remain compliant with OSHA, DOT, California EPA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The position requires experience in environmental compliance and HazMat, the ability to work independently, and the discipline to maintain detailed records in a fast-paced industrial or shipyard environment. Experience supporting military installations, shipyards, manufacturing facilities, or construction sites is highly desirable.
Responsibilities
Support the EHS Manager with environmental compliance initiatives and hazardous materials operations.
Conduct daily facility walkthroughs and inspections to monitor environmental and safety conditions.
Monitor hazardous material accumulation areas and ensure hazardous waste is shipped within required regulatory timelines.
Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly environmental compliance reports for internal and regulatory use.
Maintain inventory of environmental, safety, and hazardous material supplies to support ongoing operations.
Assist with the development and delivery of employee environmental and safety training programs.
Participate in weekly training activities, including scheduled Thursday training sessions.
Ensure compliance with California EPA, OSHA, DOT, and internal environmental requirements across all assigned areas.
Maintain accurate documentation, including manifests, inspection logs, and compliance records, in accordance with regulatory standards.
Coordinate with approved waste disposal vendors and transport providers to ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
Support audits, investigations, corrective actions, and regulatory inspections by providing documentation and on-the-ground insight.
Identify environmental risks, recommend corrective measures, and help implement improvements to reduce risk and enhance compliance.
Assist with industrial hygiene initiatives and workplace safety programs as part of the broader EHS function.
Contribute to continuous improvement of environmental programs by sharing observations, lessons learned, and best practices.
Work effectively in an industrial or shipyard environment, adapting to changing operational needs while maintaining compliance.
Essential Skills
3–5+ years of experience in environmental, HazMat, EHS, environmental compliance, or environmental technician roles.
Hands-on experience conducting inspections, reporting, documentation, and environmental compliance activities.
Experience supporting industrial, manufacturing, construction, shipyard, or similar operations.
Strong understanding of hazardous waste management procedures and regulatory requirements.
40-hour HAZWOPER Certification.
DOT Shipper Certification or demonstrated experience shipping hazardous materials.
OSHA environmental, safety, or compliance training.
RCRA and California Title 22 Hazardous Waste Facility Management Certification.
Knowledge of hazardous waste accumulation and disposal processes.
Working knowledge of environmental compliance regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
Understanding of OSHA requirements related to environmental health and safety.
Familiarity with California EPA regulations and their application in industrial settings.
Strong documentation and reporting skills, with attention to accuracy and regulatory detail.
Proven reliability and strong attendance record.
High level of professional integrity and ethical conduct.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks.
Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Demonstrated long-term career mindset and stable work history.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Prior experience working on military bases or Department of Defense facilities.
Industrial hygienist experience or training.
OSHA 30 Certification, with 1915 specialization preferred.
PEIRA HazMat Certification (320).
Bilingual communication skills in English and Spanish.
Shipyard experience, particularly in environmental or EHS functions.
Environmental Specialist experience within a manufacturing plant.
Previous experience supporting large-scale environmental or EHS compliance programs.
Familiarity with working in a fast-paced industrial or shipyard environment.
Comfort working around heavy equipment, industrial processes, and active operations.

Work Environment
This position is based at Camp Pendleton in a dynamic industrial setting that may include shipyard, manufacturing, or construction-style operations. You will work on-site in a fast-paced environment that supports critical activities, often in proximity to heavy equipment, active work areas, and hazardous materials. The schedule offers consistent daytime hours, contributing to a predictable routine. Work involves regular facility walkthroughs, inspections, and interaction with hazardous material accumulation areas, as well as coordination with waste disposal vendors and transport providers. The role requires adherence to all applicable safety protocols, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and comfort working in an industrial environment with varying noise levels and outdoor exposure.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $33.00/hr.
