divh2Psychiatrist/h2pA staff psychiatrist serves as a practicing specialist under the clinical supervision of a Senior Psychiatrist and administrative supervision of a Program Director. Psychiatrists conduct comprehensive diagnostic psychiatric evaluations, prescribe medication and other treatment interventions, monitor medication side effects, participate in the interdisciplinary treatment team process and provide a range of psychiatric services in the treatment and rehabilitation of an assigned group of clients or residents. Psychiatrists at ICL service in a variety of treatment settings: Mobile treatment teams, outpatient mental health clinics, transitional housing, and specialty care programs./ppEssential job functions include performing comprehensive, diagnostic psychiatric evaluations, evaluating clinical data pertaining to clients medical status, supervising or conducting chart reviews to ensure compliance with coding and documentation guidelines and governmental regulations, adhering to regulations regarding billing documentation, reviewing and following up on treatments ordered by other clinicians, participating in the development of the individual plan of service for each client, reviewing, approving and signing treatment plans of assigned clients, documenting clients progress in progress notes as directed by program policy, explaining medication effects and side-effects to clients, family, and/or guardians, obtaining or reviewing clients and/or guardians signature on applicable consent to treatment forms, prescribing psychiatric medications, performing individual and group psychotherapy according to the treatment plans, performing family evaluation and therapy, individually or jointly with other members of the treatment team in accordance with the treatment plan, performing crisis intervention as necessary, consulting with and advising clinical staff; providing review and education resulting from quality assurance chart audits, participating in peer review process and in quality management activities, submitting service activity logs, weekly and monthly schedule, time records etc. to Program Director, participating in or conducting case conference, participating in agency staff development and in-service education programs, supervising the direct care activities of nursing, nurse practitioner and other staff assigned to this group, developing and implementing training programs for staff, and other job-related duties as needed./ppEssential knowledge, skills and abilities include ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, regulatory and auditing agency regulations and standards, ability to write clinical notes in compliance with all applicable standards and regulations, basic computer skills including fluency in electronic medical record applications, ability to communicate effectively with team members, other providers, community members, clients and their families, ability to effectively respond to and manage psychiatric emergency situations, knowledge of the agencys policies and procedures, and knowledge of the cultural, ethnic, and linguistic needs of clients relating to cultural competence./ppPsychiatrists apply a complex body of medical knowledge in the performance of their duties. This knowledge is continuously expanding and changing in response to research, development of new treatment techniques and psychoactive medications, and greater understanding of psychiatric and developmental disorders, treatments, and health care management. Psychiatrists must maintain high levels of current knowledge about new developments in psychiatry. Further, they must apply this knowledge while managing people who may have limited or no understanding of psychiatric and developmental disorders or are not responsive to treatment for reasons other than their condition and the appropriateness of the treatment. Psychiatrists are regarded as experts in the field of psychiatry by persons in their care, an individuals caregivers, other direct care staff, treatment team members, and other medical staff. They provide expert psychiatric advice about patient conditions and treatments, while considering a wide variety of factors that impact the general well-being of those individuals under their care./ppGood communication and listening skills are critical for the performance of duties and effectiveness of treatment prescribed and conducted by Psychiatrists. Psychiatrists have frequent oral communications with patients to conduct psychiatric evaluations and individual and group therapy; additionally, they must be able to observe and comprehend non-verbal communications to understand and evaluate patient conditions and responses to treatment. Psychiatrists have frequent oral communication with caregivers, patients and their families, treatment team members, and other medical, nursing, and support staff to elicit and clarify information, answer questions, explain conditions and treatment methods, coordinate treatment, give orders for patient care, and provide advice. They must explain complex information so that it is easily understood and comprehended by patients and caregivers, who generally have limited or no understanding of medical science and the field of psychiatry. Psychiatrists have frequent written communications to prepare psychiatric evaluations, record information about patients and their response to treatment, prescribe medications, and maintain patient records. In addition, written communications include reports about the treatment programs of the program, presentations of papers about research and treatment, explanations of new developments in psychiatric care and treatment, and dissemination of procedural, policy, and other information affecting unit and facility operations. Psychiatrists are legally responsible for the accuracy of psychiatric information that they convey./ppPsychiatrists supervise staff by prescribing treatments, providing orders to implement and revise treatment programs, supervising the administration of treatment, answering questions and advising staff about patient care and treatment./ppMinimum education and experience requirements include board eligible status, unrestricted license to practice medicine in New York State, completion of a post-graduate residency training program in General Psychiatry approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for entrance into their examination, eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs, possession of current Controlled Substances Registration certificate from the US Drug Enforcement Administration, and continued employment based on the ability to maintain professional licensure, registration and participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs./p/div
