Physical Therapist II

The Staff Physical Therapist, the Physical Therapist II, reports to the Clinical Supervisor, Physical Therapy and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The P.T. II works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and adolescent may also be treated. Under general direction and upon receipt of written referrals, the P.T. II plans and administers a full range of physical therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments and disabilities. Services include patient evaluations using physical therapy tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing physical therapy modalities and procedures. The Staff Physical Therapist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care services. While performing job duties, the P.T. II may also supervise support personnel including Registered Physical Therapist Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides as well as P.T. and P.T.A. students. The Staff P.T. actively participates in departmental and organizational programs, including performance improvement activities, clinical education programs, and inservices and staff development activities. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS I. PATIENT CARE RESPONSIBILITIES Percentage of Time Spent 75% A. Performs physical therapy evaluations on referral by a licensed physician and administers various muscle, neurological, gait, functional and developmental tests to determine a patient's physical limitations. B. Establishes short and long term therapeutic intervention goals based on the results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring practitioner. C. Develops a therapeutic intervention plan based on results of the evaluation and established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic intervention programs according to the patient's progress and performance. D. Administers direct patient care, utilizing the full range of physical therapy techniques as outlined in the Series Concept. E. Delegates and supervises any part of a patient's therapeutic intervention which can be legally and appropriately done by support staff. F. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate. G. Prepares, maintains and transmits accurate patient care records as required including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes and third party payer reports (e.g. CCS, Medicare, Medi-Cal forms). H. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, families, department staff, managers and other hospital personnel. I. Reports on patients' progress at various rounds, clinics and conferences as indicated. J. Demonstrates effective time management skills. II. EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Percentage of Time Spent 15% A. Participates in staff inservice education program, staff, and area meetings. B. Participates in orientation and training of new staff. C. Participates in and provides programs to the community and other hospital departments. D. Participates in clinical instruction of affiliating physical therapy students and in departmental educational activities related to other health care students (e.g. nursing, medical and pre-physical therapy). E. Seeks appropriate opportunities for ongoing education and professional development III. DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES Percentage of Time Spent 10% A. Participates in department quality assurance and performance improvement activities. B. Contributes to the goals of the department by participating in special projects, committees, etc. C. Represents the department as a professional. OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES A. Performs any other duties related to patient care activities as required. B. Performs any other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director and/or the Director of Rehabilitative Services. QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED Minimum of 12 months experience as a licensed therapist. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to recognize signs of distress. Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification. Basic computer skills in word processing and on line communication. Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills. This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. PREFERRED Prior physical therapy experience in an academic medical center environment. Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team. Possession of a degree or certificate in Physical Therapy from an accredited professional educational program. REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Physical Therapist by the Physical Therapy Board of California.
