Technology R&D Lead Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Technology R&D Lead Engineer based in United States.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on turning emerging technology and complex enterprise problems into practical business solutions.
You will lead R&D initiatives from initial experimentation and technical validation through prototype development and pilot deployment.
The role combines full-stack engineering, AI and data capabilities, cloud architecture, technology evaluation, and strategic problem-solving.
You will work across AI, automation, innovation, engineering, product, platform, security, compliance, and business teams.
A key focus is determining where technology can create measurable value while ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, supportable, and aligned with enterprise needs.
You will also influence technical direction, mentor engineers, and help successful experiments transition toward production.

Accountabilities:

• Lead the design, development, and validation of prototypes, proofs of concept, and pilot solutions, starting from enterprise problems and working backward toward appropriate technology solutions.
• Translate research objectives and business challenges into scalable technical architectures, implementation approaches, experiments, and prototype plans.
• Build full-stack prototypes independently when required, using modern frontend and backend technologies, APIs, databases, cloud services, and collaborative development practices.
• Evaluate emerging and mature technologies for business applicability, integration potential, scalability, security, and strategic fit.
• Lead build-versus-buy assessments, vendor evaluations, platform comparisons, and technology recommendations based on business and technical requirements.
• Identify high-impact opportunities for R&D investment and contribute to prioritization of the technology innovation pipeline.
• Break down ambiguous challenges into data questions, technology hypotheses, experiments, and measurable success criteria.
• Design and lead technical validation activities, assessing technology strengths, limitations, risks, feasibility, and potential business value.
• Synthesize experimentation results into clear recommendations to advance, pivot, or discontinue initiatives.
• Incorporate AI/ML, automation, data-driven capabilities, and AI-assisted development tools into prototypes and pilots where they can create meaningful value.
• Support measurement of pilot outcomes and develop transition plans for successful solutions to move into production environments.
• Engage security, compliance, legal, risk, and other governance stakeholders early in the development lifecycle.
• Partner with engineering, product, and platform teams to support production scaling, operational handoff, and long-term maintainability.
• Establish sound development practices, code review processes, experimentation standards, and iterative delivery approaches.
• Provide technical leadership across R&D initiatives and make informed design and implementation decisions.
• Mentor and coach engineers, researchers, and early-career technologists through technical reviews, design discussions, problem-solving, and ongoing development.
• Communicate technical findings, tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations to technical and business stakeholders, connecting technology decisions to measurable business outcomes.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
• 7+ years of experience in software engineering, product development, emerging technology, or related technical roles.
• Demonstrated experience delivering prototypes, proofs of concept, pilot solutions, or production-ready technical capabilities.
• Strong hands-on full-stack development experience, including modern frontend frameworks, backend development, REST or GraphQL APIs, and relational and non-relational databases.
• Strong knowledge of modern software development frameworks, cloud platforms, system architecture, Git, CI/CD concepts, and collaborative engineering workflows.
• Strong familiarity with the Microsoft technology ecosystem, including Azure, Azure AI, Azure OpenAI Service, Microsoft Fabric, Power Platform, and related technologies.
• Experience evaluating Microsoft-native technologies, third-party alternatives, vendors, platforms, and build-versus-buy options against defined business and technical requirements.
• Familiarity with AI/ML, automation, data-driven systems, and AI-assisted development tools used for code generation, pair programming, testing, debugging, and technical analysis.
• Direct experience working with data across multiple enterprise systems.
• Experience working in regulated environments is preferred, with an understanding of privacy, AI ethics, model governance, compliance, auditability, risk, and data governance.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate across technical and business functions and successfully transition solutions toward operational environments.
• Experience mentoring engineers, researchers, or early-career technologists through code reviews, design sessions, and technical coaching.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts, decisions, risks, and tradeoffs in terms of business value.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and critical-thinking capabilities.
• Problem-first mindset, intellectual curiosity, self-direction, and comfort working through ambiguity.
• Preferred experience with graph databases, knowledge graphs, network analysis, applied analytics, open-source contributions, technical writing, or innovation-focused environments.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future immigration sponsorship.
