Surgical Technologist

Job Summary:

The Surgical Technologist assists during surgical procedures by maintaining a sterile surgical field and providing necessary instrumentation to the surgical team. This role requires expertise in sterile and aseptic techniques, knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures, and adherence to safety standards to ensure optimal patient care. The Surgical Technologist works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and participates actively in perioperative team communications and unit activities to maintain high quality patient care. Responsibilities:

  • Apply sterile and aseptic techniques during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
  • Maintain and inspect surgical instruments and supplies for proper packaging, processing, and sterility.
  • Ensure operating room safety and proper equipment function to maximize patient safety during procedures.
  • Monitor the sterile field for potential contamination and initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop competency with Tier 1 surgical cases and maintain flexibility in care delivery within scope of practice.
  • Communicate effectively with the perioperative team, fully participating in Time Out processes including briefings and debriefings.
  • Assist with patient transports, room turnovers, and room preparation.
  • Maintain professional behavior and stay current with new technologies, procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Adhere to HIPAA compliance and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Certifications:
  • Completion of a Certified Surgical Technologist program and/or Licensed Surgical Technologist license.
  • Licensed as a Surgical Technologist in the state of Colorado.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association.
  • Proficient computer skills or ability to obtain within 90 days for online learning and documentation.
  • Working knowledge of English language including reading, writing, and speaking.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
  • Familiarity with AORN standards and perioperative protocols.
  • Experience with Tier 1 surgical cases.
Special Considerations:
  • Must comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Work involves exposure to healthcare hazards such as radiation, toxic chemicals, biological hazards, heat, noise, dust, and stress.
  • Physical demands include standing (50%), walking (20%), lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally, bending, squatting, and twisting.
  • Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines independently or as part of a team.

Scheduling:
  • Work schedule consists of three 12-hour day shifts per week.
  • Shift assignments are based on facility needs and staffing requirements.
