Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic

Position purpose
- Maintain and restore the CNC machine tools, automation, and plant equipment that support Hartwell's precision manufacturing operations. Diagnose failures, perform lasting electrical and mechanical repairs, and complete preventive maintenance that reduces unplanned downtime. Work with production, engineering, and equipment suppliers to return machines to safe, reliable service while supporting facility repairs as assigned.
Equipment and systems
- The role supports Hartwell's mix of DMG MORI equipment, including NHX horizontal machining centres in linear pallet pool (LPP) cells, DMC and DMU 65 five-axis machines, and NL, NT, and NTX turning and mill-turn platforms; Okuma LU-series lathes and the HOR automation cell; and Mazak and Haas CNC machines. Other equipment includes Swiss machines, the UNISIG Gun-drill, EDM and saw equipment, FANUC robots, robotic tending, pallet handling, tool changers and magazines, conveyors, coolant systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and related controls. Assignments will evolve as new equipment and automation are installed.
Essential Duties Other Duties May Be Assigned
- Restore production. Respond to breakdowns, prioritize equipment affecting production, isolate the fault, complete the repair, verify machine operation with the user department, and communicate status and expected recovery time.
- Troubleshoot CNC controls. Use machine alarms, electrical prints, PLC and ladder information, control diagnostics, and vendor manuals to diagnose motors, servo and spindle drives, encoders, sensors, power supplies, control boards, wiring, and safety interlocks.
- Repair mechanical systems. Service spindles, ball screws, bearings, turrets, chucks, tool changers, way covers, coolant and lubrication systems, pumps, hydraulics, pneumatics, and chip handling equipment; assist with machine levelling, alignment, and geometry checks.
- Support integrated cells. Diagnose interfaces among CNC machines, FANUC robots, pallet pools, part handling, and ancillary equipment. Follow approved recovery steps after stoppages and confirm safeguards and interlocks operate before releasing a cell.
- Prevent repeat failures. Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, cleaning, lubrication, fluid and filter changes, and component replacement. Identify recurring faults, determine likely causes, and recommend corrective actions and critical spare parts.
- Document the work. Record symptoms, troubleshooting steps, parts used, repairs, test results, and follow-up needs in maintenance records. Maintain clear handoffs across shifts and develop repeatable instructions for frequent issues.
- Support equipment projects. Assist with machine moves, installations, commissioning, vendor service visits, upgrades, and acceptance checks. Coordinate with production and engineering to minimize disruption and validate equipment readiness.
- Maintain the facility. Perform or coordinate related plant electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and general facility repairs within training and authorization; escalate specialized work to qualified personnel or service providers.
- Work safely and share knowledge. Apply required lockout/tagout, electrical safety, lifting, guarding, and housekeeping practices. Help train other maintenance staff and operators on basic care, fault reporting, and approved restart procedures.
Education and/or Experience Required
- Required. High school diploma or GED, plus approximately 8 to 10 years of industrial maintenance trade experience, including at least two years troubleshooting and repairing electrical or electronic systems; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Required. Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair CNC equipment independently using electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, precision measuring tools, diagnostic instruments, and OEM service information.
- Preferred. Direct service experience with DMG MORI or Mori Seiki, Okuma, Mazak, Haas, FANUC robotics, palletized machining systems, Swiss machines, or comparable high-precision machine tools. OEM field-service experience and technical training in CNC controls, PLCs, robotics, or industrial electricity are valuable.
Other Skills And Abilities
- Read electrical prints, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams, PLC and CNC diagnostics, and OEM manuals; use meters and other diagnostic tools to trace faults to their cause.

Use hand and precision tools safely, document repairs clearly, and communicate machine status with operators, engineers, vendors, and the next shift. Provide overtime or weekend support when production or installation needs require it.
Working Conditions And Physical Requirements
- Works primarily in a machine shop and occasionally outdoors or at another Hartwell facility Exposure may include noise, coolants, oils, dust, fumes, heat, and moving equipment; uses required protective equipment.
- Frequently stands and walks; reaches, bends, kneels, crouches, grips tools, and performs fine hand movements. Occasionally lifts or carries parts and tools up to 50 pounds. Moves heavier machine components with approved lifting equipment or assistance.
Physical Demands
- These demands are representative of the activities required to perform the essential functions of the Maintenance Technician role.
- Communicates with operators, supervisors, engineering, and equipment suppliers to diagnose issues and confirm equipment is ready to return to service.
- Frequently stands, walks, reaches, and handles tools, parts, gauges, and documentation; reads drawings, CNC alarms, gauges, and electrical information.
- Uses both hands and fine finger movements to test components, operate diagnostic instruments, and complete precision repairs.
- Bends, kneels, crouches, climbs, and reaches overhead to inspect, service, and repair equipment.
- Occasionally lifts or carries items weighing 21 to 50 pounds; uses approved hoists, material-handling equipment, or assistance for heavier components.
- May work in restricted machine areas and move between Hartwell facilities as assigned
