Founded in 1961, Sandy Spring Friends School is a progressive, coed, academically-rigorous day and boarding school serving students from age three through 12th grade. Summary: The main focus of this position will be to provide coverage when either of the full-time nurses are not available. Supervised by the Health Center Director, this position is responsible for medication administration and providing preventive, acute, and follow-up care for students in grades Pre-K3 through 12th grade during the academic year, as well as campers enrolled in our Summer at Sandy Spring day camp mid-June through mid-August. This position has no supervisory responsibilities and is not benefit eligible.

Sandy Spring Friends School employs two school nurses year-round and a third during the summer months. Care for all students may be divided between positions as determined by the Director of the Health Center. The School Nurse is expected to be on campus daily when school or camp is in session from 7:45 am until 4:15 pm.

Essential Job Functions:

• Preventive Care includes participating in hearing, vision, and other student screenings; health education/prevention efforts for students/campers; and communication as needed with administrators, faculty, staff, and parents promoting student health and well being.

• Acute and Follow-up Care includes providing direct nursing care for sick or injured students such as assessment, triage, and referral to emergency services (“911”), urgent care, physicians, or other healthcare professionals; accompanying students to the hospital and remaining until parents arrive; complying with physician’s orders for student care.

• Medication Administration includes distribution of prescription and non-prescription medications to students per doctor’s instructions; supporting the work of the medication technicians on campus; and implementing federal, state, and local health regulations.

• Administrative Duties include maintaining Maryland nursing licensure and CPR certification; assisting in the collection and maintenance of student health and medication records; carrying a school radio at all times when on campus; and maintaining strict professional confidentiality regarding health information and records.

Knowledge and Skill Set Requirements: Licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Maryland; Bachelor’s degree in nursing or closely related field is preferred; detail oriented, meticulously organized, and able to work independently; computer literate, proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, and possessing some database experience; able to write effectively and juggle multiple demands including frequent questions and phone calls from staff, parents, and students. Experience with and knowledge of school nursing is preferred.

Physical Requirements: Daily desk work including significant amounts of telephone and computer time; frequent walking both inside campus buildings and outside navigating a large campus with uneven pavement, as well as utilizing a golf cart; navigation of stairs as a part of daily routines; and the ability to respond quickly and efficiently to injury/illness incidents.
