Medical Lab Scientist

Under minimal supervision, the Medical Lab Scientist applies advanced technical skills and seasoned judgment to provide a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services independently and competently in a hospital-based laboratory. Shift work and night and weekend call are required to provide 24-hour laboratory coverage in Sitka, AK. This role involves performing all levels of testing, including CLIA-defined high complexity testing, while working with a diverse patient population including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform all levels of testing, including CLIA-defined high complexity testing and laboratory services.
  • Evaluate, interpret, and ensure the accuracy of test results, identifying and resolving inconsistencies.
  • Provide specialized expertise in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology, and infectious disease safety.
  • Ensure sample suitability and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Establish a quality control program to ensure acceptable levels of analytical performance from specimen receipt through analysis and reporting of results.
  • Write procedures for the department and coordinate manual review, updates, and distribution.
  • Assess the competency of testing personnel and assist with training new employees and ongoing staff education.
  • Participate in process improvement activities and ensure compliance with CAP standards and CLIA regulations.
  • Coordinate inventory levels with management to maintain proper supply levels.

Qualifications

Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (AMT) or equivalent certification as determined by a national credentialing agency.
  • Clinical competency required within 3 months of hire and every three years thereafter.

Experience

  • One (1) year of progressive clinical experience or one (1) year of hospital internship post-degree.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory testing, including CLIA-defined high complexity testing.
  • Understanding of LIS operations and the ability to utilize various laboratory and software applications.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment use and operations as well as quality control measures.
  • Knowledge of CLIA, Joint Commission, CAP, and other applicable regulatory requirements.

Abilities

  • Ability to interpret laboratory reports and quality control results, troubleshoot problems effectively.
  • Ability to work independently while validating lab results prior to releasing them to providers.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
  • Ability to provide education and training in laboratory medicine practices.
