Police Sergeant

The James Madison University Police Department is accepting applications for a full-time Police Sergeant. The position is full-time staff (classified) and is located in Harrisonburg, Virginia, United States.

Duties and responsibilities include supervising and maintaining a task force in cooperation with the Harrisonburg Police Department, meeting departmental standards on active shooter training, assisting with patrol administration and operation, providing technical assistance in department equipment and management, supervising and managing the performance evaluation process, providing effective supervision to employees, supervising patrol operations and communications, and performing other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications include being a Commonwealth of Virginia Certified Police Officer, having a valid Virginia driver's license, and having completed Field Training. Additional considerations include having spent a considerable amount of time in patrol, a strong understanding of case law as it's applied to Campus Policing, a strong understanding of the U. S. Constitution as it relates to the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th amendments, and a demonstrated understanding and commitment to the Mission of the James Madison University Police Department.

Employees permanently assigned to night shift qualify for shift differential pay in addition to their base salary. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.
