Registered Nurse RN - Emergency Room

Summary The RN functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice. The role involves triaging patients, obtaining history and vital signs, assessing patients, and acting independently to initiate immediate care when a physician is absent. The RN provides care for acutely ill and non-acute patients, performs procedures ranging from complex to simple nursing skills, assists physicians, offers physical and psychological comfort to patients and families, delivers discharge and follow‑up instructions, and manages pre‑hospital care orders. The RN works with sophisticated equipment in a frequently stressful environment. Responsibilities (25%) Performs nursing assessments, intervenes appropriately and promptly, and participates in care planning. (25%) Regularly assesses patient needs and provides skilled nursing services per the physician‑authorized plan of care and standard nursing practice. (20%) Processes physician/provider orders accurately, completely, and timely, following up on medication changes and clarifications. (15%) Evaluates treatment plan effectiveness and suggests or facilitates changes to improve patient care. (15%) Actively participates in updating or revising the treatment plan collaboratively with the team, using current information. Other Duties and Responsibilities Use physical assessment techniques to identify patient problems and care needs. Recognize self‑limitations and seek appropriate resources; possess competence in airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, blood gas analysis, venipuncture, and physical assessment. Reassess patient health status and identify significant condition changes. Individualize plan of care and coordinate with the healthcare team. Communicate pertinent aspects of care to patients, families, and colleagues; initiate home‑health referrals when appropriate. Set priorities and implement nursing measures aligned with the identified plan and standard of care. Respond to changes in patient condition to manage, reduce, or eliminate symptoms and promote comfort. Demonstrate respect for patient dignity and privacy. Document nursing interventions and patient responses. Maintain a safe patient environment and prevent risk situations. Provide patient/family education, explain procedures, use educational materials, and document instructions given to family. Show effective interpersonal skills with customers and assist peers in care activities. Recognize stress in others and use positive coping techniques; set goals and prioritize emergency department care according to acuity. Follow medical center policies and attend work reliably. Participate in continuing education, medical center modules, ED in‑services, and ED skills day. Engage actively in Relationship Based Care. Certifications and Licensure RN: Registered Nurse BLS: Basic Life Support – equivalent experience within 3 months of hire or transfer ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support – equivalent experience within 12 months of hire or transfer TNCC or ATCN: Trauma Nurse Core Course or Advanced Trauma Clinical Nursing – equivalent experience within 12 months of hire or transfer PALS: Pediatric Advanced Life Support – equivalent experience within 12 months of hire or transfer ENPC: Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course – equivalent experience within 12 months of hire or transfer TEAM ADVANCED: Techniques for Effective Aggression Management – equivalent experience within 6 months of hire or transfer (employees on or before 12/31/2023 have 24 months) NIMS IS 100: NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System – equivalent experience within 6 months of hire or transfer NIMS IS 700: NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Management System – equivalent experience within 6 months of hire or transfer Qualifications Associate’s Degree required; Bachelor preferred. Knowledge of nursing skills typically acquired through two years of experience in a medical center or similar setting. Weekend RN positions require a minimum of two years experience. Mandatory TB testing and annual OSHA training per Exposure Control Plan. Completion of ESI triage class before assignment as triage nurse (if applicable). Telemetry class as assigned. NRP preferred; recommended to obtain within first 1.5 years of hire or transfer. CEN preferred; recommended to obtain. Physical and Mental Requirements & Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Use of personal protective equipment, including latex or substitutes. Mobility throughout facility with or without assisted device; must perform all functions of the job. Vision and hearing required, with or without assistive devices. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; must follow blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing requirements. Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and stay alert. Dexterity to handle, reach, grasp, and repeat movements regularly. Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) lift 20 lbs., and constantly (67-100% of the workday) lift 10 lbs. or perform arm/leg control pushes/pulls. #J-18808-Ljbffr
