COMM/NAV Tech II

Summary A highly skilled and detail-oriented F/A-18 COM/NAV Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) is responsible for performing, inspecting, and verifying the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of communication and navigation systems on F/A-18 aircraft. This role ensures that all COM/NAV system work is completed in accordance with Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) standards and safety protocols. Responsibilities Troubleshoots malfunctions in F/A-18 airframe, weapons, and engine electrical systems of moderate difficulty at the organizational maintenance level. This technician repairs, replaces, and rebuilds electrical system wiring, connectors, and components using hand tools, power tools, and applicable test equipment. This technician reads and interprets manufacturers maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data and other specifications to determine the feasibility and method of repairing or replacing damaged wiring, malfunctioning or damaged components. Applies professional technical expertise and guidance to solve complex problems by interpreting technical data such as blueprints or manufacturers manuals. Work typically requires a comprehensive knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting and repair procedures, and replacement of components, a thorough knowledge of aircraft wiring systems. The ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems. A detailed knowledge of aircraft tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, cable tension meters, sheet metal brakes and sheers is required. Must possess the experience and ability to provide technical support to Electrical/mechanical engineers and customers. Must possess excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedules. This mechanic will be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records and is responsible for providing guidance and technical expertise to lower-level technicians throughout all aircraft modifications and/or maintenance efforts. Required Educational/Skills Background High school diploma or equivalent. Capable of operating support equipment Level II – Five (5) years previous experience as a COMNAV Technician. (CDI Experience). Must be capable of attaining Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) within required timeframe. Working knowledge of the COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 Series. Training to include NAMTRGD Navy AME “A” or factory equivalent ejection seat and environmental control system course of instruction. Knowledge of naval maintenance publications, maintenance requirement cards, and the ability to document maintenance utilizing the Naval Aviation Logistics Command Information System (NALCOMIS). Physical Demand This position requires normal physical functions. Work may require frequent bending, reaching and climbing. May frequently lift and carry items weighing up to fifty pounds and occasionally lift heavier items with the assistance of other workers. Work may be performed on top or under equipment in cramped or awkward positions. Normal color perception required. Must be physically qualified to handle and work with explosive devices. May be required to work in areas in the hangar and on the flightline that are noisy and dusty. May be exposed to moderate discomforts, such as heat, cold and wind. May be required to wear personal protective equipment, when applicable.
