Summary:


FMCC is seeking a sharp, versatile Staff Attorney to join our in-house Legal team and work directly alongside the General Counsel. This is a rare chance for an attorney who loves variety: rather than being siloed into a single practice area, you will touch nearly every legal issue a thriving heavy-civil contractor faces. You will be mentored by an experienced GC, given real ownership early, and trusted to grow into a senior in-house role as the company expands.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• You will gain broad, hands-on exposure across the issues that drive a regional construction enterprise:
• Construction Law & Claims - delay and disruption, payment disputes, mechanic's liens, bond and surety matters, and construction defect issues.
• Contracts & Procurement - drafting, reviewing, and negotiating prime contracts, subcontracts, and public-sector agreements from the proposal/RFP stage through execution and go-forward compliance.
• Employment & Labor Law - partnering with Human Resources on labor matters, investigations, workers' compensation, EEOC charges, and a unionized workforce.
• Compliance & Government Contracts - federal, DC, Maryland, and Virginia regulatory compliance, CBE/LSDBE obligations, bid protests, and government contract review.
• Corporate & Transactional - corporate governance, commercial transactions, and supporting major business deals.
• Tax - supporting the GC and outside tax counsel on transactional and entity-level matters.

What your day will look like:
• Advise internal clients - including Contracts, Procurement, Finance, Project Management, and HR - on day-to-day legal questions, identifying and evaluating risk and delivering practical solutions.
• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial and public-sector agreements, contracts, and subcontracts.
• Interpret contract terms and assess business and legal risk, communicating clearly to management and other stakeholders.
• Support proposal responses (including RFPs) through contract execution and ongoing compliance.
• Assist with construction claims analysis, dispute resolution, and litigation strategy, and help negotiate settlements where warranted.
• Help develop and maintain corporate policies, templates, and form contracts for routine transactions.
• Build deep knowledge of FMCC's business strategy and operations, and grow your responsibilities under the mentorship of the General Counsel.

Job Requirements:
• Licensure - Active license to practice law in the District of Columbia is required; admission (or eligibility for reciprocity) in Virginia is a strong plus.
• Education - JD from an accredited law school.
• Experience - 1-3 years of relevant legal experience; exposure to construction, contracts, employment, or government-contracts work is highly valued. We will also consider standout candidates earlier in their careers who are eager to learn.
• Strong analytical skills and excellent written and oral communication.
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities and thrive in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment.
• A collaborative, self-motivated team player who is comfortable taking ownership.
• Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
• Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background test.

Working Conditions:
• Primarily based at our Washington, D.C. headquarters, with flexibility considered for the right candidate.
• Prolonged periods seated at a desk working on a computer, with finger dexterity for extensive typing.
• Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at a time and to see, with or without vision correction.
