Laboratory Technician

General duties include ensuring specimens received by the laboratory are acceptable for testing by applying the appropriate criteria. Receiving, processing, and distribution of lab specimens. Applying criteria for specimen rejection as applicable. Following hospital/laboratory safety and infection control policies and reporting variances to section supervisors as they occur. Following universal precautions at all times when dealing with blood or body fluids. Handling biohazardous and chemically hazardous materials per safety guidelines. Disinfecting workspace at appropriate frequencies per quality manual. Assuring proper packaging and disposal of waste chemicals. Maintaining proper documentation of generated waste. Operating both primary and secondary instrumentation proficiently. Changing or preparing reagents, controls and documenting per policy. Preparing specimens for testing per policy and procedure. Reporting test results within established departmental turn-around times after verifying documentation is complete and accurate. Performing up to high complexity testing accurately and timely in laboratory section(s). Floating between laboratory sections and assisting in other areas as needed per workflow demands. Maintaining working knowledge of policies, procedures, protocols, processes applicable to assigned laboratory sections. Operating, calibrating, conducting performance checks and maintaining any clinical laboratory instrument or equipment. Troubleshooting basic instrument malfunctions and documenting appropriately. Determining when an instrument's service representative should be contacted for assistance. Analyzing quality control material for each procedure, recording values according to section policy and reporting to technical Supervisor when results are outside established limits. Performing comparison studies of precision, accuracy and linearity on new or existing procedures and reporting results by established deadlines. Performing and accurately recording proficiency surveys. Reviewing results for accuracy before verification. Documenting Critical Call Value notification, and investigating delta checks as appropriate. Investigating unexpected or absurd results as needed. Properly routing electronic results, forms and copies within the specified time frame. Performing all aspects of reagent quality control as specified in the quality control manuals. Managing appropriate inventory levels for testing escalating to leads as needed. Responsible for the continuous operations in testing of specimens in each laboratory section. Responsible for maintaining competencies in each laboratory section per CLIA frequency guidelines. Assisting in the clinical orientation and training of new or less skilled laboratory personnel as requested by the section Supervisor. Assisting with student, intern, or resident clinical education. Performing any duties within the scope of practice as assigned in routine, unusual or emergency situations.

Education qualifications include a BS Degree in Medical Lab Science preferred. Successful completion of N AACLS Accredited Program preferred. Meets requirements to sit for a CLS/MT Certification exam.

Licenses and certifications include Clinical Lab Generalist or Specialist licensed by Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners as CLG or CLS. Preferred ASCP Board certification. For all temporary licensure employees, a copy of your national certification exam report stating you passed must be submitted prior to your temporary licensure expiration. A permanent licensure MUST be acquired within one year of hire.
