Public Safety Training Specialist (Driving Instructor)

Driving Instructor Manages one or more aspects of a training and development program. This may include determining training needs for law enforcement troopers, developing curriculum for Arizona POST training and in-service training programs, coordinating training, evaluating program effectiveness, developing and administering a training program, developing and implementing an employee career mobility program, and instructing Arizona POST training courses. Performs related duties as assigned. This is a competitive classification. Must successfully complete the examination process. Qualifications Appraisal Board (QAB) - weighted 100%. Essential Functions Delivers sworn proficiency training in areas such as firearms, defensive tactics, tactical driving, field training, and other required or elective training programs. Assists in developing instructional training objectives based on subject matter expertise by researching information and evaluating curriculum for currency and trends. Assists in the design of training materials, handouts, lesson plans, and audiovisual presentation materials. Adapts existing training materials to meet instructional objectives for Department employees. Designs and creates comprehensive training delivery methods considering the context of the student group and the training curriculum. Improves instructional materials, lesson plans, handouts, or demonstrations. Coaches and gives constructive comments and advice to students on performance. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Knowledge of group dynamics and group processes, problem‑solving methods and techniques, instructional methods and training techniques, intervention, change management, and facilitation strategies, principles and practices of adult learning, current training and development trends and resources, program or project management techniques, report writing techniques to produce analytical reports or written materials having high organizational impact in appropriate format, word processing, spreadsheet, and training presentation software, application of electronic systems for the delivery of training programs, fair use principles and copyright restrictions regarding the development and delivery of training programs. Skill in delivering presentations to diverse audiences, effective oral and written communications, the rules of English grammar and composition to prepare, review, and edit documents, formulating concepts and developing strategies and solutions for training needs, developing practical frameworks that describe complex ideas in understandable, usable ways, operating instructional, presentational, audiovisual, and teleconferencing equipment. Ability to evaluate information against a set of standards, achieve and maintain Arizona POST specialty instructor certification in one or more subject areas, organize, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks concurrently, exercise independent judgment or initiative and function with minimal supervision, work under stringent deadlines, establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse workgroups, develop feasible short and long‑range plans/goals related to project and program development, use modern office and training equipment to perform administrative and training tasks, conduct research, gather information, and analyze a variety of data, research and reconcile inaccuracies and errors in documents, computerized data sources, and other written materials, comprehend and interpret written materials and draw valid conclusions. Minimum Qualifications Seven years of professional‑level law enforcement experience as an Arizona POST certified peace officer. Requires Arizona POST General Instructor certification. Must have and maintain a valid Arizona driver license. Working conditions: Work setting may include office, classroom, firearms range, driving track, training mat, or other proficiency training venues. May be required to lift or carry up to 60 pounds of training equipment. Additional requirements: Statewide travel may be required to perform certain work functions. Progression to the next step requires an overall performance rating of at least "Standard" in the last 12 months. Must successfully complete the examination process.
