We are seeking a Senior Manager for Maternal and Infant Health to lead and support a broad range of equitable maternal health policy, advocacy and research projects with a special focus on addressing the maternal and infant health crises in Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) communities. This work encompasses solving for health and health care inequities, adverse social drivers of health, and systemic racism, as well as improving the quality of clinical care.
The Senior Manager will contribute thought leadership and subject matter expertise to the organization's policy analysis, policy development, and advocacy activities related to maternal and infant health. They will grow new relationships and nurture existing ones with coalition partners, advisors, and other external stakeholders, respond to media and other communications requests, develop and implement advocacy campaigns, and collaborate with colleagues across the organization to holistically address the barriers that childbearing and parenting people face and pursue proactive policy solutions. The Senior Manager for Maternal and Infant Health is a full-time position based in our Washington, DC office and reports to the Managing Director for Health Justice. The
National Partnership maintains a hybrid work environment where staff are required to be in the office a minimum of 4 days per month, with additional in-office and in-person days determined by your role and job responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as subject matter expert on maternal and infant health and health equity and provide strategic and technical assistance to policy makers, federal agencies, researchers, advocates and others
- Build, repair, and nurture cross-movement relationships, with particular attention to diversifying partnerships to authentically include the voices, priorities, and needs of under-represented communities.
- Surface and elevate the connections between maternal health, birth justice, reproductive justice, and reproductive rights in advocating for and communicating about organizational priorities, grounded in authentic community engagement and their own lived experience.
- Represent the organization at policy tables, coalition activities, advocacy events, Congressional events, media/press interviews, and other speaking engagements as needed.
- Collaborate with Congressional Relations and other organizational staff to develop and execute impactful federal legislative strategies. This includes supporting rapid response efforts across the organization.
- Project manage select maternal health projects (including managing external and internal stakeholders, work plans and timelines, and supervising staff, as appropriate)
- Support the Health Justice team's response to proposed rules from regulatory agencies and requests for information pertaining to maternal and infant health and health justice, including by contributing to comment letters, template letters and coordinating with coalition partners.
- Help to conceive, develop, and create impactful policy advocacy and related maternal health and other NPWF products, as well as to develop and implement effective dissemination strategies for them.
- Collaborate with the Communications team to generate email, social media, and web content that engages and mobilizes target audiences.
- Support efforts to secure additional revenue for the organization in close collaboration with HJ and Development staff, including drafting and reviewing proposals and reports, tracking deliverables, and managing relationships with funders.
- Demonstrated deep commitment to racial justice, consumer and community engagement, and advancing health equity for women and families based on an authentic understanding of intersectionality, structural racism, reproductive justice and birth equity.
- Experience with leveraging public policy to effectively address the U.S. maternal health crisis, especially to better meet the needs of BIPOC birthing people and families and other marginalized communities.
- Substantial understanding of the U.S. maternity care system, its limitations, and the public policies that undergird it, including issues related to personnel, care settings, evidence-based care practices, and high-value care models.
- Excellent coalition-building, engagement, and advocacy skills and a demonstrated ability to create and support trustworthy, collaborative relationships with diverse partners and build and nurture coalitions for the purposes of developing, advancing, and implementing effective policy solutions that prioritize community-identified needs and build on community assets.
- Familiarity with developing and maintaining funder relationships, and generating funding from foundations and other sources, including the ability to design and develop compelling project proposals.
- Public speaking skills and experience, and a willingness and skills to engage with media and do press interviews.
- Ability to produce clear and compelling written materials that support high-impact advocacy.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, demanding environment with competing priorities.
- Excellent strategic judgment, the ability to spot and seize opportunities, and the desire to be part of a collaborative team.
- Prior relationships with local, state, or national leaders in maternal and infant health, health equity, and/or reproductive justice preferred.
- Existing relationships with federal or state-based health policy organizations is an added plus.
Supervisory Responsibility: Supervising staff, as appropriate
Classification: The National Partnership recognizes a staff bargaining unit, National Partnership United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in the NP United bargaining unit.
Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this role is $99,437-$122,721 with the exact salary determined by years of relevant experience, in alignment with NPWF's compensation setting criteria.
