Job Summary Company: hawaiianel Role: Professional – Technical Trainer Number of Vacancies: 1 Location: Pearl City – Oahu Hiring Range: $89,100.00 to $113,700.00 (Placement according to skills and qualifications) Job Function Identifies training needs, leads, directs, develops, implements, and monitors technical training focused on operational and/or maintenance activities to ensure employees meet training requirements. Provides training and guidance for the safe, reliable, and economic operation of HECO’s generating systems. Ensures training compliance with company standards and State and Federal regulations. Essential Functions Training Development – Conducts training needs assessments. Researches, analyzes, develops, and evaluates training to achieve company goals. Develops evaluation tools and proficiency testing for competency. Documents and updates training procedures and manuals, and administers development opportunities for succession planning. Coordinates training sessions. Ongoing Training – Documents and updates training procedures and manuals. Tracks training to keep all aspects current. Oversees various department training initiatives. Provides training on new or updated operating procedures and supports others on program development and implementation. Develops and provides training materials for a human performance program within assigned departments of the Power Supply Process Area, focusing on improving safety, availability, and reducing operating costs. Oversees training for Supervisors and Maintenance Working Foremen, including development of betterment training for current supervisors and training for new Shift Supervisors. Participates in overhauls, monitors unit start‑ups, and provides direction. Assists supervisors with troubleshooting and investigation of operational/maintenance problems. Researches, analyzes, develops, evaluates, coordinates, and schedules training for Operator Trainees. Performs administrative functions such as interviewing and selection, preparing performance appraisals, administering coaching, and maintaining training records. Assists in developing, monitoring, and analyzing the division’s annual training budget. Temporarily substitutes for the Shift Supervisor and/or Maintenance Supervisor as required, enforcing operating and company policies and labor contracts. Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned. Basic Qualifications – Knowledge Requirements In-depth knowledge of operation and maintenance of generating units, electrical systems, digital control systems, switchyards, transmission, distribution, and substation facilities. Knowledge of human performance behavior and methods to mitigate error. Knowledge of operating and maintenance policies and emergency corrective procedures. Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications. Knowledge of requirements for compliance with State and Federal environmental and safety regulations. Knowledge of continuous improvement processes, including: Participation on continuous improvement teams Learning and applying basic LEAN tools Learning and practicing problem solving Following and improving standard work Basic Qualifications – Skills Requirements Demonstrated leadership skills with effective written, oral, and listening communication; conflict resolution skills; and willingness and ability to train. Supports two‑way communications, promoting teamwork and a self‑directed workforce to support company initiatives. Ability to read, comprehend, and utilize technical publications such as manufacturer’s instruction manuals, unit data books, blueprints, and piping and instrument diagrams. Troubleshooting skills for determining operating and maintenance problems. Capacity to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities. Ability to handle difficult or sensitive issues with tact, courtesy, and discretion. Must be able to obtain or qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet driving position hiring standards. Must be able to work various shifts. Experience Requirements 5‑7 years of operational and/or maintenance experience in an electric utility or equivalent. 3‑5 years of experience analyzing, developing, and/or implementing technical training programs. 1‑2 years of supervisory or leadership experience. 1‑2 years of experience preparing operating budgets and managing expenses (preferred). 1‑2 years of experience training peers or subordinates. Qualified or capable of qualifying as a Shift Supervisor, possessing supervisory/leadership skills to work with a variety of individuals in a power plant setting (preferred).
