TITLE: Director of Secondary Instruction


PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under limited supervision, performs a variety of supervisory and administrative tasks to provide leadership and coordination of curricular and instructional programs for grades 6 through 12. Employees are responsible for supporting and coordinating the efforts of principals and other curriculum personnel, as well as supervision of secondary instructional coaches. Employees, in cooperation with other instructional leaders, are responsible for interpreting changes from the federal, state and local level and informing principles of the implications of those changes. Employees work with principals and other leadership to monitor the overall effectiveness of programs and effectively implement new programs and services deemed appropriate by leadership teams.

SALARY: $81,158.56 - $129,771.68

QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensing/Certification:
  • Hold a South Carolina school administrator license.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License
Education :
  • Master's degree in Education
  • Other qualifications as the superintendent and board may find appropriate.
Experience:
  • Five (5) years secondary classroom experience
  • Five years of experience in school administration or equivalent experience required. Principal experience is preferred. Secondary experience is preferred.
  • Or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides consultation and support for school-based leadership and provides supervision of designated program employees.
  • Maintains current knowledge of secondary education and of new or impending legislation to ensure compliance with external regulations and to communicate pertinent information to the administration and staff.
  • Serve as liaison to the Executive Director of Instruction and Chief of Schools in planning, developing, coordinating and evaluating district wide instructional related initiatives for grades 6-12.
  • Maintain appropriate records and statistics regarding trends, needs and success at the secondary school level.
  • Facilitates the preparation of curriculum documents, including local school improvement plans and updates annually specifying curriculum, enrollment, and budgeting of resources.
  • Modifies budgets as program demands and categorical funding changes occur, with adjustments which retain proper balance among various program areas.
  • Compiles and analyzes data to assist in preparation of reports to local, state, and federal agencies and for planning and evaluating the secondary education programs in the district.
  • Confers with appropriate staff concerning student enrollment, number and kinds of positions needed, and assignment of duties, as required by state and local regulations
  • Recommends courses of study and/or support services to be offered based on information obtained through review of survey and assessment data.
  • Assists in the evaluation of the effectiveness of instructional programs and projects through follow-up of students' anecdotal, EOG and assessment results.
  • Identify, promote and provide staff development based on opportunities for improvement identified in the assessment data, classroom observations, and an implementation of new courses of study.
  • Ensures curriculum materials, instructional strategies, and classroom procedures are aligned to ensure maximum student achievement and success.
  • Informs individual staff members of changes needed and alternatives which will improve their instructional methods; use of facilities; and relationships with students, staff, and the public.
  • Maintains Personal Growth Plans on all employees supervised or assigned and works closely to ensure all components are addressed.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • All areas of Secondary curriculum.

  • Considerable knowledge of the organization and communication channels of the school system

  • Provide technical leadership in instruction of students
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite/Google Platform
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other people.
  • Work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of groups.
  • Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures and standards for services offered
  • Ability to evaluate existing programs and make recommendations for improvements
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory.
  • Ability to plan, develop and implement and evaluate programs
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to communicate well with school personnel, employees, and central office staff.
  • Ability to provide leadership and to supervise the planning, development, and establishment of new, modified or improved secondary education programs, services and activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and use problem solving skills
  • Comply with confidentiality requirements in local, state and federal policies and statutes.

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Instruction

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle and travel throughout the district. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms, and must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must be able to use hands and fingers for manual dexterity in an office environment. Other required qualities include close vision, ability to adjust visual focus, and the ability to talk and hear.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works near video displays. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Regular coordination with school administrators and daily liaison activity throughout the division. Contact with media personnel. Attend school division activities. Regular contact is made with teachers, parents, students, and other community members. These contacts may be contentious. Occasional contact with School Board members, State Administrators, and representatives of Federal Agencies is necessary.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : 233 days

SALARY GRADE: DIRECTOR

OSHA: This position is not to handle any human body fluids, biological agents, laboratory chemicals, or be exposed to hazardous materials such as noise, asbestos, or carcinogens.
