Basic Function Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher or specialist in providing instructional support to individuals or small groups of students with disabilities in a Special Education program. Assist in meeting specific student instructional needs, including feeding, toileting, positioning, and monitoring students with medical conditions. Perform a variety of instructional, medical, behavioral, and clerical duties as assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics Senior Instructional Assistant‑Medical incumbents work with students with disabilities in various settings, such as a special day class, resource program, or general education classroom. Responsibilities include supporting students’ medical, self‑care, toileting, and self‑feeding needs; providing instructional support in cognitive, gross and fine motor skills, feeding skills, self‑help skills, vocational skills, and behavior; utilizing digitized instructional programs and the district’s Learning Management System; assisting with wheelchair mobility; handling medical equipment; administering first aid and CPR; performing custodial duties; participating in IEP teams; maintaining records; supervising students during all activities; and performing related duties as assigned. Knowledge Of Basic child development practices for students with disabilities Unique needs of students with severe and multiple medical conditions Strategies and techniques for instruction of medically fragile students Reading, writing, and mathematics Effective oral and written communication skills Safe practices in classroom and playground activities Basic instructional strategies First aid and CPR procedures Ability To Use appropriate interpersonal skills of tact, patience and courtesy Demonstrate empathy, friendliness, patience and responsibility Work collaboratively with classroom teachers and staff to support academic, behavioral, health, vocational, social‑emotional, and self‑help learning Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information Assist in responding to student emergencies Assist with toileting, feeding, and basic health procedures Prepare instructional materials as directed Maintain records as directed Understand and follow oral and written directions Work cooperatively with others and independently when needed Assist in lifting students and equipment, including fully grown students Demonstrate attendance sufficient to complete duties as required Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Maintain a work pace appropriate to the position Education and Experience Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school plus one year of paid or volunteer experience working with individuals with medical disabilities, or possession of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate and experience working with individuals with severe disabilities. Licenses and Other Requirements Valid First Aid and CPR certificates issued by an authorized agency and maintained in current status. Some positions may require the use of a second designated language. All candidates must meet the state Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirement for this position. This can be met in one of three ways: Possession of an associate’s degree or higher. Completion of at least 48 full semester units at an accredited college or university. Taking and passing the ESSA exam administered by Downey Unified School District. Applicants meeting the ESSA requirement through a degree or completed units should attach a copy of the degree or college-level transcripts. Environment Classroom environment for students with severe and multiple disabilities, including changing diapers and toileting students. Physical Abilities Monitor students’ health and behavior during activities, bend at the waist, kneel, walk, stand for extended periods, and operate specialized equipment. Lift, carry, push, and/or pull students up to 40 lbs unassisted, and over 40 lbs with assistance.
