The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is seeking candidates for an Environmental Specialist III position vacancy out of the department's Eastern Maine Regional Office in Bangor. DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST III Opening Date: July 27, 2026 Closing Date: End of the day August 07, 2026 Location: Bangor Position Number: 08300-1812 Position Type: Full Time/Year-Round Class Code: 9253 Grade: 23 (Professional/Technical Unit) Salary: $25.43 - $35.68 Per Hour* (This includes a 7.33% Salary Adjustment). This is earning potential over the course of nine steps; new hires will start at step 01. Annual step increases are based on performance reviews and authorization of such increases.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position in the Department's Solid Materials Management Unit conducts licensing, compliance and technical assistance work related to beneficial use activities and solid waste facilities including landfills, transfer stations, processing facilities and municipal solid waste incinerators. The position also performs compliance and assistance work related to the Department's non-hazardous waste transporter program, biomedical waste program, and authorizations for fire department training burns. The position provides program coverage for over 100 municipalities and is currently responsible for over 50 licensed sites/projects. Additionally, the position is responsible for complaint response and resolution both at unregulated sites and licensed sites or facilities. The position also assists with solid waste training sessions and may assist with other project work throughout the Department as needed.

- Knowledge and/or experience specific to solid waste management
- Experience preparing or reviewing applications under local, state, or federal requirements.
- Experience working with a variety of parties, such as the general public, municipal officials, the regulated community, and special interest groups.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in the transfer of technical information to non-technical people.
- Ability to identify and resolve problems independently.
- Experience balancing time-sensitive tasks related to multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, and some familiarity with ArcGIS.
