Student Health Services Staff Physician and Head Team Physician (on-site)

Compensation

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $143,168.00 - $281,904.00 (placement in range related to qualifications and years of experience).

Position Overview

As an SHS Staff Physician, you provide clinical and educational services in support of the overall operation of the Student Health Center. Working independently and under general supervision, you administer direct medical care, including diagnosis and treatment, to patients utilizing written protocols as guidelines. As the Head Team Physician, you provide acute and continuity care to student athletes on and off the field, coordinate care with providers including athletic trainers, and serve as medical oversight of athletic training staff while developing and enhancing clinical and educational services for intercollegiate athletics, club sports, athletic trainers and NCAA policy and procedures.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care – Student Health Services

• Provide direct patient primary care and perform professional patient care medical services as assigned.
• Examine and diagnose patients; prescribe and administer medical treatment.
• Order examinations, analyses, x‑rays, physical therapy, and prescription drugs.
• Perform minor surgical procedures and provide pre‑ and post‑operative primary care of surgical cases.
• Provide continuing care of patients, obtain appropriate consultations, and arrange appropriate transfers.
• Offer patient education to support self‑care and health maintenance.
• Advocate preventative medicine and public health measures.
• Review reports, records, and the general progress of patient clinical care.
• Maintain patient records and reports according to professional standards, including S‑O‑A‑P format.
• Prepare reports and related correspondence regarding patient care and condition.
• Respect and maintain confidentiality of patients and staff.
• Document ongoing and significant problems on the Problem List.
• Complete appropriate forms including work‑related injury forms, encounter forms, ancillary forms, and urgent care forms.

Intercollegiate Athletics – Direct Clinical Care & Medical Oversight

• Provide comprehensive sports medicine evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and injuries for UC Merced students and intercollegiate athletes.
• Provide consultation to SHS providers, athletic trainers, coaches, and administrators.
• Work effectively with all medical providers and experts who support student‑athletes.
• Maintain complete medical records on student athletes, including pre‑participation clearance, care of illnesses or injuries, results of referrals or diagnostic testing, and follow‑up care.
• Serve as a recognized authority to independently direct medical care and make final treatment decisions for student‑athletes.
• Participate in physician coverage for sports medicine clinics, training‑room coverage, practices, events, competitions, pre‑participation physicals, etc., as assigned.
• In collaboration with the Head Athletic Trainer, create and maintain policies and procedures in support of a Sports Medicine Policy and Procedures manual.
• Ensure all emergency action plans are up to date and implemented with EMS coverage.
• Ensure all required training and education for athletics personnel is up to date.
• Develop and implement improved screening, prevention, and performance enhancement programs.
• Provide medical consultation for drug testing procedures in accordance with approved policies and procedures.
• Maintain knowledge of NCAA and conference regulations, travel and sideline coverage, and responsibilities related to the team physician role.
• Maintain knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA regulations.

• Comply with Medical Staff Bylaws and professional requirements of the H. Rajender Reddy Health Center Medical Staff.
• Maintain current medical license, CPR certification and other required specialties or board certificates.
• Maintain current continuing medical evaluation certificates, DEA certification, and BLS certification.
• Provide documentation to SHS.
• Organize and prioritize workload, assure timely patient care, and maintain productivity goals.
• Maintain communication and coordinate functions with staff.
• Maintain a professional demeanor under pressure and in difficult situations.
• Initiate basic CPR as needed, adhere to hours of work and payroll responsibilities, and demonstrate flexibility in work schedules.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including case management, continuity, and coordination of care in complex cases assigned by supervisor.

Leadership, Consultative Oversight & Professional Growth

• Communicate knowledge formally and informally to other disciplines.
• Collaborate with disciplines to plan, develop, gather, implement, and evaluate patient education materials.
• Attend and participate constructively in staff meetings and SHS committees as assigned.
• Participate in the development of standards, policies, and procedures essential to the delivery of quality medical, nursing, and preventative health care services.
• Orientate new employees and serve in a teaching capacity and resource person for development of other health care workers.
• Support professionalism in nursing and physician assistant practice.
• Assist in identifying mid‑level practitioner staff educational needs and issues.
• Prepare professional literature to share with other clinical providers and staff.
• Participate in Quality Assurance activities, facilitate problem‑solving, and offer constructive concerns and ideas for improving practice efficiency.
• Engage in self‑evaluation and goal‑setting to maintain and improve quality of own performance.
• Develop and maintain a clinical concentration or specialty consistent with SHS needs.
• Maintain current literature and educational needs for ongoing advanced practice.
• Share research information with staff.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree and possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California.
• Completion of an ACGME‑accredited residency training program and an ACGME‑accredited sports medicine fellowship program.
• At least 3 years of experience practicing in primary care sports medicine with most clinical activity directly in sports medicine, preferably with a university athletics department.
• Current DEA Certificate and board certification in sports medicine, and board certification in a primary care specialty (Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics).
• Demonstrated advanced clinical skills and knowledge essential to the successful performance of advanced physician duties.
• Effective communication with patients and clinical staff members.
• Effective diagnostic and decision‑making skills in more difficult cases.
• Knowledge of NCAA, conference regulations and other athletic associations.
• Experience supervising other health care professionals.
• Experience in administration and policy development.
• Experience with sports ultrasound (preferred).
• Experience in college student health (preferred).
• Experience as a team physician for college, high school, Paralympic, Olympic, or professional teams (preferred).
• Experience working within a college athletics program as a medical provider (preferred).
• Ability to diagnose patient condition and make associated treatment recommendations.
• Proficient with electronic/medical records systems; computer literate.
• Experience in sports medicine leadership, preferably including a university athletics department (preferred).
