HVAC Technician

Must hold a journeyman's card, high school education a must, special classes a plus. Several years of progressively responsible experience in HVAC repairs, to include controls and operational features of HVAC equipment is required.

Reports To: Lead HVAC Technician

Job Goal: To provide a comfort level to all district buildings conducive to learning and teaching.

Performance Responsibilities:

The responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited to the following:

• All general heating and air conditioning maintenance and repair.
• Repair and maintain all boiler room pumps and motors, compressors, feed pumps, draft fans, and any other equipment related to HVAC systems.
• Be able to train building custodians in proper HVAC operation and make sure that the custodians keep boiler rooms clean at all times.
• Assist with repairs to A/C and refrigeration equipment.
• Have basic working knowledge of related control systems.
• Keep air filters in all air handling units, unit ventilators, etc.; clean and change as required.
• Keep all equipment properly lubricated and calibrated.
• Keep in stock special parts for equipment such as: switches, compressors, pneumatic controls, and any other necessary parts to keep HVAC systems operating.
• Maintain close working relations with local mechanical contractors in the event the district has repair problems greater than in house capabilities.
• Maintain a current library of equipment and supply catalogs which pertain to the operation of heating equipment.
• Must be able to follow instructions, both written and oral.
• Must be able to perform all assigned duties.
• Must be available for after-hours emergencies.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance and Operations.
• Works with others consistently in a cooperative and respectful manner.

Terms: Twelve months, salary to be established by the Board.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in compliance with the Board's policy on evaluation and classified personnel.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements: Requires work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether like or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisor.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of documents. Must be able to speak with poise, voice control and confidence and to articulate information to others.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in oral, written or diagrammatic form; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Must have the ability to comprehend and implement basic machinery functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons of varying educational and cultural backgrounds.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals, to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using automated office equipment and communications machinery.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items including computer keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. The worker is subject to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to hear and understand communications through a telephone.

Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, policies and procedures of Spartanburg School District Seven pertaining to specific duties of the position. Is knowledgeable in the standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
