Summary: To practice in an advanced role to provide developmentally and age-appropriate Palliative Care services to patients and families both inpatient and in the ambulatory setting at Texas Children's. The nurse practitioner (NP) will work under a delineation of clinical privileges and work collaboratively with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. Practicing under established guidelines and clinical protocols, the NP assumes independent and interdependent responsibilities in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of treatment and procedures to meet patient and family needs. As an advanced practice nurse, the NP is responsible for education, research, consultation and evaluation of clinical practice at various levels. Provides age-appropriate care for one or more of the following age groups routinely: Neonate, Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult. Collects and evaluates health assessment data to provide appropriate palliative interventions. Consistently demonstrates effective communication skills and works to eliminate communication barriers. Participate in departmental quality, education and safety initiatives on an ongoing basis. Consistently seeks and applies new knowledge relevant to nursing to clinical practice. Demonstrates current professional, managerial, and/or technical knowledge and skills. Demonstrates NP role behaviors consistent with the development of advanced nursing practice.

Job Purpose: Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.

Job Duties:

• Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
• Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
• Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
• Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
• Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
• Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
• Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
• Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
• Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master of Science in Nursing
• Advanced Practitioner Registered Nurse license from the Texas Board of Nursing.
• License may be Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (ACPNP), or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
• Specialty certification recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing.
• A minimum of three (1) years of RN experience providing care in a hospital, outpatient or hospice setting to chronic, complex patients or patients nearing end-of-life.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Preferred Qualifications:

• Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner with 3-5 years of experience as a nurse practitioner.
• Strongly prefer palliative care experience with the ability and comfort of inpatient/outpatient patient care.
