Virginia Urology will provide access to individualized, quality, and compassionate urological care from a highly specialized and diverse teams while maintaining a fulfilling work environment. Overall Objective:
Our Operating Room RN demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, range of treatment, and appropriate care to the patients served. They are responsible for delivery of perioperative nursing care to surgical patients, they maintain aseptic and safe environment in the Operating Room, and perform assistant, circulator and scrub roles. This position services the following populations: adult and geriatric. Principal Activities and Expected End Results:
- Develops a care plan that meets individual patient needs and follows established nursing standards of care/ practice and applicable Ambulatory Surgery Center policies and procedures.
- Utilizes critical thinking skills in the formulation and implementation of the patient's plan of care. Records actions and patient response.
- Potential discharge needs are identified and communicated according to policy.
• Demonstrates an understanding of, and appropriately applies, policies, utilizes available resources. • Identifies unsafe patient care practices and assumes responsibility for intervention. • Prioritizes and delegates tasks/assignments based on patient needs and skill level of staff. • Delivers medication according to policy.
- Verifies surgeon, identifies the patient and operative site. Ensures that informed consent and History and Physical are present and complete prior to surgery.
- Performs pre-operative assessment based on unit policy. Assessment includes, but is not limited to, the review of pertinent pre-op data; physical and psychosocial considerations and any special needs related that may impact the delivery of care during the preoperative course.
- Acts as a resource person and provides direction to other members of the health care team to ensure comprehensive and safe patient care.
- Advises and directs team members in the selection and preparation of routine supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Diligently maintains, and is responsible for the performance of sponge, instrument and sharps counts.
- Provides support and assistance to anesthesia providers as needed, specifically during induction and emergence of anesthesia.
- Provides a patient status report to PACU nurse upon completion of the procedure.
- Changes in the patient's physiological and behavioral status are addressed and documented as they occur:
- Positions patients, provides protection of pressure points, and keeps body parts in proper alignment.
- Properly prepares, handles, and documents specimens according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs surgical scrub according to procedure. Gowns and gloves self-others following gowning and gloving policy and procedure.
- Participates in room turnover procedures to include set-up and clean-up protocols.
- Communicates effectively with supervisors, co-workers, physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Demonstrates the knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the life span.
• Maintain ACLS, and CPR certification.
- Attends continuing education including but not limited to; Safety, Infection Control, Disaster preparedness, code reviews, fire safety, IVCS and MH, radiation safety and document attendance on continuing education worksheet. The updated yearly worksheet will be located in personnel file at the time of evaluation. These continuing education sessions can be in the form of in-services, online training and testing, handouts, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned in support of clinical excellence, operational effectiveness and patient-centered care.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Licensed in the State of Virginia or awaiting reciprocity.
- Demonstrated competency in circulating with a minimum of two (2) years' experience.
- CPR and ACLS certification.
- Demonstrated understanding of sterile field management, infection prevention standards and perioperative safety protocols.
- Strong critical thinking and clinical judgement skills.
- High-level communication and team collaboration.
Acute care hospital experience in an ICU, ER or Med-Surg or high-volume surgical center with exposure to multiple specialties. Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during surgical procedures and throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance, and move, position, or assist patients and equipment in accordance with safe patient handling guidelines.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, and twist while preparing rooms, positioning patients, and accessing supplies/equipment.
- Manual dexterity to handle surgical instruments, operate equipment, chart electronically, and perform clinical tasks with precision.
- Visual acuity to observe patient condition, read monitors, identify instruments, and maintain sterile field integrity.
- Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a fast-paced procedural environment, including alarms, team instructions, and patient needs.
- Ability to respond quickly in urgent or emergency situations and move between procedure rooms as needed.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
- Ability to work in an environment with exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, cleaning agents, and surgical smoke, using appropriate safety precautions.
- Cleans equipment in accordance with established departmental practices.
- Identifies and transports patients as needed, assists with shaving the operative site as indicated.
- Provides in services, serves as a preceptor and provides orientation and technical assistance for staff in Operating Room.
- Assists with orientation and clinical education of new personnel.
- May be assigned as charge nurse according to competency validation and departmental needs. Charge nurse duties include but are not limited to:
• Personnel assignments according to competencies and patient acuity. • Scheduling surgical procedure add on cases. • Determining flow of surgical schedule. • Supervising personnel assigned to staff. • Provides patient education and documentation of understanding regarding tests, procedures, equipment and medications, as well as education necessary for the patient to meet continued health care needs. • Performs special projects as assigned.
• Participates in the on-going correction and updating of physician preference cards. Communicates changes to appropriate service coordinator. • Exhibits strong initiative, personal accountability, and ability to independently identify and execute improvement opportunities.
This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, and will work Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 4:30 pm.
