Construction Materials Testing Technician

Tetra Tech, Inc is currently seeking a Construction Materials Testing Technician in the Billings, MT office. The Construction Materials Testing Technician will complete field and laboratory testing, observations, and inspection of construction materials over a variety of construction types including but not limited to civil and structural. Materials commonly tested and inspected for quality include soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, asphalt, bolting/welding, wood, spray applied fireproofing and others.

Tetra Tech's AASHTO accredited laboratory and field testing and inspection program has a wide range of equipment, facilities, and staff to support engineering design and construction quality control. Our laboratories conduct testing for soil, rock, and construction materials that range from common index tests or sophisticated triaxial shear, permeability, and consolidation tests. Field testing and inspection projects include airport terminals and runways, dam and spillway construction, all sizes of commercial construction, and civil infrastructure. Technicians and inspectors are certified by ACI, MDT, WAQTC, AWS and other appropriate agencies.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs work as directed in accordance with training and specified ASTM, AASHTO, MDT, MPWSS, County, City etc. procedures.
  • Communicate testing, observation, and inspection results to Tetra Tech project manager, client quality assurance representative, contractor quality control representative, and others as required.
  • Follow designated chain of custody processes to collect and transport material specimen to laboratory for analysis.
  • Maintains Tetra Tech internal and accredited quality standards including training, equipment calibrations, equipment maintenance, and reporting.
  • Use reporting software to create clear, accurate, and well written reports for submittal and review by designated Tetra Tech senior staff.
  • Follow and adhere to all Tetra Tech safety guidelines and standards.
  • Collecting material samples such as concrete, aggregate, soil, and asphalt, and transporting them to a laboratory for testing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years of relevant or related experience.
  • Must have strong mathematical aptitude.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft office suite, especially Excel.
  • A strong candidate will have one more current ACI, WAQTC, AWS, or CWI certifications.
  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Management or similar is preferred, but will train the right candidate with a background in the construction industry.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel and perform field work (approx. 50% of travel required).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Walk and work on uneven terrain, stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, climb, and perform field and laboratory testing in varying weather conditions while working safely around active construction equipment and traffic.
  • Performing repetitive manual tasks, including operating testing equipment and handling specimens.
  • Maintaining sufficient vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to conduct tests, record results, and observe construction activities safely.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow.
  • Exposure to construction-site conditions such as dust, dirt, mud, vibration, and elevated noise levels.
  • Working around heavy equipment, construction traffic, excavation activities, cranes, and other potential job-site hazards while following strict safety procedures.
  • Walking on uneven surfaces including gravel, soil, asphalt, foundations, embankments, and unfinished structures.
  • Performing field inspections at commercial, industrial, transportation, and civil infrastructure projects such as highways, airports, bridges, buildings, dams, and utility installations.
  • Working in laboratories conducting tests on soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, masonry, and other construction materials using specialized testing equipment.
  • Periods of office work involving data entry, report preparation, documentation, and communication with project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Occasional travel to project sites and the ability to adjust to changing schedules based on construction activities and testing needs.

Additional Information:

  • Full-time, Monday through Friday work schedule (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client need (this can include overtime and occasional weekend work).
  • Work will be performed in an office, field, and lab setting.

Target salary range: $22.50 / hour to $24.50 / hour. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
