TPO R&D Engineer

Carlisle Construction Materials (CCM) is a market leader in single-ply commercial roofing membranes, including TPO—protecting the buildings where people work, learn, heal, and live. We are seeking an R&D Engineer Membranes to apply advanced laboratory expertise and growing technical leadership to the development and performance of our TPO membrane product lines.

Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to work with considerable independence while continuing to build expertise in polymer science, membrane formulation, testing, and manufacturing processes. You will design and execute experiments, analyze data, contribute to product development strategies, and mentor junior scientists while preparing for progression into an Associate Scientist role.

• Design and execute laboratory experiments involving TPO membrane materials, following established methods and SOPs.
• Perform and oversee physical, mechanical, and chemical testing using ASTM standards and laboratory instrumentation such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, and mechanical testers.
• Lead TPO formulation studies involving polyolefin blending, UV stabilizers, flame retardants, and TiO₂ pigment systems.
• Support pilot-scale trials and develop an understanding of extrusion, compounding, lamination, calendering, and heat-welding processes.
• Support quality testing, raw material evaluations, and plant troubleshooting in partnership with R&D, Manufacturing, and Quality teams.
• Analyze experimental data, prepare technical reports, maintain accurate laboratory documentation, and communicate findings to project teams.
• Mentor junior scientists and contribute to technical training and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science & Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related technical discipline; Master’s preferred.
• 5+ years of progressive R&D/laboratory experience 
• Experience with polymer testing, formulation, membrane/film characterization, extrusion, or compounding preferred.
• Strong experimental, analytical, statistical, communication, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across technical and manufacturing teams.
