• Contract Duration: 12 months
• Pay Rate: $45.00-$50.00 / Hour (USD)
• Shift / Schedule: Monday through Friday; typical work weeks range from 40 to 50 hours with overtime commonly required; average overtime is approximately 10 hours per week; some longer days should be expected
• Travel Requirements: Regular travel required throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Upper Michigan, and surrounding areas; overnight travel may occur one to two nights per week depending on project assignments; Xcel will provide a company vehicle and required equipment
• Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Job Summary

The contractor will serve as a Survey Crew Chief responsible for performing land survey work supporting distribution electric, gas, electric transmission, and substation projects. Responsibilities include conducting topographic surveys, construction surveys, and other land surveying activities using company-provided GPS, laser scanning, and survey equipment across multiple project locations. The individual receives assignments from the office survey group, travels to project sites, and independently performs field survey work. Most of the day is spent in the field with limited office time, and travel to various project locations is common. This is an individual contributor role and does not include direct people management responsibilities. The role supports a large organization with hundreds of employees working on various projects, with the contractor working closely with the survey group, hiring manager, and project teams supporting electric, gas, transmission, and substation work. The work is primarily internal, supporting business customers and project teams. The work is highly independent and field based, with a supportive and collaborative culture featuring frequent interaction across multiple project teams while maintaining ownership of assigned survey activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform land survey work supporting distribution electric, gas, electric transmission, and substation projects
• Conduct topographic surveys, construction surveys, and other land surveying activities
• Operate company-provided GPS, laser scanning, and survey equipment across multiple project locations
• Receive assignments from the office survey group and travel to project sites to independently perform field survey work
• Travel regularly to various project locations throughout the assigned service territory
• Work closely with the survey group, hiring manager, and project teams supporting electric, gas, transmission, and substation work
• Maintain ownership of assigned survey activities while collaborating across multiple project teams
• Drive company vehicles to active project sites and operate survey equipment in field environments
• Work extended days when needed and occasionally stay overnight near project locations in accordance with standard field safety practices

Required Experience

• The ideal candidate has approximately 10 years of land surveying experience; however, candidates with 4 to 5 years of solid, relevant experience will also be considered
• The hiring manager is open to both less experienced candidates with growth potential and highly experienced professionals

Education Requirements

• A two-year Surveying Technology or Civil Engineering Technician educational background is preferred but not required if the candidate possesses strong relevant experience

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• This is a field-based position involving travel to active project sites
• Candidates should be comfortable working outdoors, traveling regularly, driving company vehicles, operating survey equipment, working extended days when needed, and occasionally staying overnight near project locations
• Standard field safety practices will apply
• Overnight travel may occur one to two nights per week depending on project assignments
• Candidates who may struggle with travel requirements, occasional overnight stays, longer workdays, or field-heavy work environments should consider whether personal constraints preventing travel or extended schedules could be a concern
• Although experienced survey professionals can contribute quickly, it is expected to take approximately one year to become fully acclimated to processes, procedures, policies, and project standards
