Staff Physician (Pathologist)

Summary

Staff Physician – Pathologist (Path and Laboratory). This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30 2026 or until all positions are filled. Eligible applications received will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine
• Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
• Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification
• Residency options: (1) ACGME or AOA accredited program; (2) One year of post‑medical‑school training plus two years of independent practice; (3) Non‑U.S. residency followed by at least three years of independent practice in the U.S.
• PRPs—physician residents, surgery residents in gap years—may be appointed under specific conditions
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Physical requirements include walking, standing, light and moderate lifting (up to 44 lbs.), gentle pushing and pulling, use of both hands, rapid coordination, near vision (13 to 16 inches), far vision (20/20 or 20/40 in the other eye), depth perception, color differentiation, clear speech, hearing (aid permitted)

Duties

• Serve as staff pathologist under the Chief – Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service
• Maintain licensure and credentials to practice pathology within full scope: Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Immunology, Serology, Microbiology, Phlebotomy, and Anatomic Pathology (Surgical Pathology, Cytology, Autopsy Services)
• Coordinate testing performed off‑site via VA reference laboratories or contracted private laboratories
• Laboratory operates 24/7
• Provide anatomic pathology and cytology services: clinical consultation, diagnostic interpretation, intraoperative frozen sections, intraoperative and intra‑procedural consultations, sign‑out within CAP guidelines, special stains, peripheral smears
• Participate in multidisciplinary conferences (Cancer Conference, Transfusion Committee, Tumor Board, M&M conferences)
• Engage in quality assurance: 10% retrospective review, inter‑laboratory comparison, ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE)
• Serve on hospital committees, including peer review
• Medical director of one or more Community Based Outpatient Clinics
• Provide 24‑hour on‑call services per schedule
• Review hematology fluids and issue interpretations
• Participate in minimum required CME for licensure maintenance
• Complete VA assigned TMS educational modules and Lab assigned Medialab modules
• Sign out pathology cases in any fellowship area completed
• Work schedule Monday to Friday 08:00‑16:30
• On‑call requirements per schedule
