Lead Principal Engineer Specialist

Responsibilities Provide general technical, engineering management, and specialized subject‑matter expertise to the standards and technical report development process. Lead project engineering management for working groups and/or user forums as assigned. Develop proposals for statement of work for new and revised standards & technical reports. Coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans, integrating technical activities, and ensuring timely issuance of certificates. Lead technical oversight of report generation/assessment with strict confidentiality and compliance with procedural and regulatory requirements. Manage the work programs of assigned subcommittees and working groups, including technical planning, meeting logistics, facilitation, and report preparation. Serve as the focal point for committee activities by writing and issuing agendas, minutes, resolving problems, and communicating information. Negotiate contracts as required. Plan and conduct technical meetings, prepare meeting materials, and facilitate technical sessions and seminars. Develop industry standards & technical reports in new technical areas by exploring opportunities in expanding and emerging technologies. Recruit qualified technical volunteers and lead planning of annual meetings, conferences, executive committee, and steering group/committee meetings. Identify and lead new initiatives or special projects and identify gaps/problems to develop process improvements for assigned programs. Conduct user‑experience research to identify obstacles, improve ease‑of‑use, customer satisfaction, and inform future product and service development. Leverage the expertise of applicable functional roles within the larger SAE group and existing best practices to develop portions of the program strategic plan. Ensure appropriate parties are connected and aligned with deadlines, goals, and milestones; coordinate opportunities in expanding and emerging technologies. Develop and manage budgets of assigned activities; coordinate activities of assigned personnel, including consultants and volunteers. Manage applicable contracts as assigned. Minimum Requirements Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science/IT, Manufacturing Technology, or related technical field. Experienced program and committee leader with 10+ years managing cross‑functional initiatives, stakeholder groups, confidential deliverables, executive communications, process improvement, and governance support. Skilled in facilitating working groups, producing formal reports, coordinating complex timelines, and driving consensus across diverse audiences. Five years of experience managing volunteer committees, including recruitment, retention, and management of volunteers. Five years’ experience leading a substantial program and/or initiative. In‑depth technical/engineering expertise with experience in the areas of responsibility for the position. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, excellent analytical, writing and editing, and presentation skills. Ability to organize effectively, carry out independent action, work on simultaneous assignments, and perform functions in a confidential manner. Strong project management skills and proficiency with planning software and tools. Global and cultural sensitivities; attention to detail; strong team development, collaboration, and problem‑solving skills. Understanding of trade association operations; strong leadership skills for achieving organizational long‑ and short‑range business plans and goals. Ability to work with high‑level executives, industry leaders, and government, military, academic partners. Preferred Qualifications Strong computer skills including MS Office and typical office application software. Knowledge of software and database systems. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Hybrid environment, predominantly remote with occasional need to be in the office. Frequent travel to global locations. Extensive daily use of digital equipment (laptop, keyboard, mouse, etc.). Tasks may involve conference set‑up duties, including handling heavy boxes over 25 lbs.
