Job Details Position: Registered Dental Assistant Location: Native American Health Center, Inc., 160 Capp St, San Francisco, CA 94110 Department: Dental Reports To: Dental Assistant Supervisor (DAS) Shift / Hours: Full time, 40 hours per week, 100% FTE; occasional Saturdays as needed. Employment Type: Full Time, Non-Exempt, Union Education: High School diploma or equivalent Category: Health Care Salary Range: $30.34 - $35.77 per hour Position Summary The Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) is a key member of the Native American Health Center’s (NAHC) Dental Department who will provide chairside assisting support in a multi‑disciplinary setting and will perform RDA functions within their scope of licensure. The RDA will work at both General and Pediatric clinics, performing all duties in accordance with the Dental Practice Act, adhering to infection control practices and maintaining HIPAA standards. This position will work occasional Saturdays as needed and directed by operations. Duties and Responsibilities Assist in the provision of high‑quality care within scope of service consistent with accepted standards of care for Registered Dental Assistants. Display optimal customer service by greeting all members in a courteous, professional and timely manner. Exhibit good chairside manners by displaying calm and patient demeanor, capable of working with various populations (children, elderly, individuals with mental and physical disabilities). Perform chart preparation by reviewing chart notes for planned treatment, setting up trays and operatory appropriately. Prepare operatory for member reception and maintain aseptic conditions in adherence to infection control practices. Proficiently and accurately update and enter member health history, medications and complete dental charting in the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) system (Dentrix) in a complete, accurate and timely manner; provide oral hygiene instructions to members and parents/caregivers in collaboration with the dentist. Obtain and record members’ vitals (blood pressure, pulse, etc.) as indicated by treatment and/or requested by the assigned dental provider. Capture diagnostic quality radiographs using digital technology and document them in the member’s EDR. Prepare instruments, trays, materials and equipment for all dental procedures. Prior to treatment, provide pre‑ and post‑operative instructions, review required forms (e.g., consent, timeout) and ensure signatures are obtained with guidance from the assigned provider. Apply four‑handed chairside assisting techniques to optimize visibility, isolation, and transfer of instruments and materials for efficient and ergonomic procedures. Assist clinical staff in optimizing member flow by keeping work areas organized, stocked and clean; seat members, “float” and support other dental team members. Remove all instruments from operatory in a timely manner and prepare them for sterilization. Perform sterilization and maintenance procedures in accordance with department policy and manufacturer’s guidelines. Obtain preliminary impressions for diagnostic and opposing study models. Manage prosthetic lab cases by pouring, packaging, recording outgoing cases into the tracking log, and storing incoming cases in designated areas. Inform the Dental Assistant Supervisor of any supplies that need replenishment to maintain consistent levels. Communicate effectively with dental personnel to best serve members, relaying information about member care, referrals, and other relevant details. Perform coronal polishing, explain plaque control and provide oral hygiene instructions to members, parents and caregivers. Apply topical fluorides and varnishes as directed by the assigned provider. Apply pit and fissure sealants as preventative treatment. Fabricate, adjust, cement and remove indirect provisional crowns. Remove excess cement from surfaces of teeth using safe hand instrument techniques. Assist Orthodontist with ligature ties removal and replacement under guidance (Oakland only). Demonstrate understanding and application of safety policies to ensure safe patient practices. Perform all duties in a safe manner, following protective protocols for personal and others’ safety. Maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; practice ergonomic stretches regularly. Participate in internal quality improvement teams and proactively drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with mission, strategic goals, federal and state laws, regulations, and accreditation standards. Provide translation services for the department as needed. Participate in outreach and off‑site events providing dental treatment. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Licensed Registered Dental Assistant in California with one year of work experience as an RDA. Dental radiation safety certificate and experience with digital x‑ray technology. BLS/CPR certification obtained prior to start date and kept current. Experience with an EDR system (Dentrix) is a plus. Coronal polishing certificate required. Sealant certification required. Self‑starter with high integrity and attention to detail. Capable of managing day‑to‑day challenges, adjusting to shifting priorities, and demonstrating flexibility. Works well independently and as part of a team. Knowledge of the Bay Area Native American community with a commitment to serving Native Americans and other vulnerable patient populations.
