Patient Safety Companion

Position at Vassar Brothers Medical Center Summary: Patient Safety Companions will provide close observation and constant monitoring of patients with changes in physical or mental status under the supervision of the registered nurse upon receipt of a physician order. The patient safety companion performs all duties necessary to provide transportation of patients and equipment needed within the hospital to support optimum safe and efficient patient care. The hospital patient safety companion will seek to provide the highest quality care while demonstrating respect for the dignity of each patient consistent with the hospital's philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the nursing department. Population served based on scope of services in the department. Responsibilities include:

• Assisting in the delivery of patient care as a nursing team member by performing tasks as directed by the nurse for patients who require close observation.
• Assisting in maintaining patient safety and adhering to hospital policy on infection control.
• Assisting in the provision of comfort measures and therapeutic activities to patients as directed by the nurse.
• Reviewing with the nurse written care plan and tasks for shift.
• Assisting with safe transfer of patients to and from stretcher or wheelchair to bed or chair, using safe transfer techniques, assistive devices as needed, and proper body mechanics always.
• Performing transportation of patients within the hospital, adhering to safe transfer techniques and always utilizing two patient identifiers and ticket to ride.
• Utilizing Vocera and Zebra/IPOD device appropriately and keeping patient's privacy.
• Assisting with the continuity of patient care through harmonious working relationships with other staff members and through appropriate interfacing with patient, family, and providers.
• Distributing equipment as they are requested by nursing floors within 15 minutes of request.
• Assisting with transportation of stretchers or other equipment to hospital departments.
• Maintaining and modeling Nuvance Health values.
• Demonstrating regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
• Performing other duties as required.

Education Skills Experience: Highschool Diploma or equivalent experience. Must complete Patient Safety Companion Orientation and Competencies. Other Information: Basic Life Support Certification required within 6 months of hire date.
