Job Title: Phlebotomist II
Job Description
This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-volume blood draws and specimen collection while supporting smooth laboratory workflow in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will be responsible for accurately collecting, labeling, processing, and preparing specimens for transport, as well as assisting with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement recommendations. This position requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, using both straight needles and butterfly needles as appropriate.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Collect, handle, and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy prior to processing.
- Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following all required procedures and temperature controls.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
- Comply with all OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards while performing daily duties.
- Attend and complete required annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a clean and safe work environment.
- Update patient information accurately in the system as needed to support proper documentation and reporting.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate, providing accurate information in a professional manner.
- Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and specimen handling processes.
- Participate in training and support of team members as needed, particularly in phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures.
- Focus primarily on blood draws during peak and busiest days, coordinating with team members who handle computer and administrative tasks.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- At least 2 years of phlebotomy experience, including routine and high-volume blood draws.
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
- Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions with specimen tubes and verifying orders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- High school diploma or GED, with 2–4 years of related work experience.
- Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders accurately.
- Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
- Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and to respond to inquiries.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, particularly on high-volume days.
- Capability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone accurately when required.
- Color vision sufficient to meet role requirements, including accurate reading of labels and indicators.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a busy clinical laboratory or hospital environment with high patient volumes.
- Comfort working primarily on venipuncture and blood draws during peak days while learning computer systems during less busy times.
- Ability to participate in ongoing departmental trainings and adapt to updated procedures and protocols.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and requisitions simultaneously.
- Ability to contribute to workflow improvement by identifying issues and suggesting practical solutions.
- Willingness to undergo TB and Hepatitis B screening and related occupational health requirements, as applicable.
- Willingness to complete color vision screening to meet role expectations.
Work Environment
This role is based in a busy clinical unit and involves working primarily on the highest-volume days, including Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays, with a schedule that includes early morning start times. Typical weekday shifts run from approximately 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with Saturday shifts around 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., depending on site operations. Initially, you may work the same shift at another nearby site plus Saturdays until the primary site begins Saturday operations; once that site opens on Saturdays, you will transition to working there full time. The environment is fast paced, with a strong focus on continuous blood draws and specimen collection during peak periods, while other team members handle most computer and administrative tasks. You will receive training on the computer systems during less busy times to support broader workflow needs. The role requires adherence to laboratory safety standards, OSHA and DEP regulations, and proper specimen handling procedures. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen transport containers, and you will follow established protocols for temperature control and specimen storage. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a laboratory and patient-facing setting is expected, along with compliance with all safety and infection control guidelines.
