Overview A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Barista, you are an integral member of the team at the heart of our Cafés. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right beverages and café items. Equally, you are an essential part of the café team in maintaining the attractive presentation and ensuring the efficient running of the Café. You help unpack and stock deliveries and to tidy our bakes case and dining area. You work our registers in a quick and friendly manner, ensuring our customers receive a highly professional service. Responsibilities Master the operational competencies of a Barnes & Noble barista, including using diverse technology (registers, computers, tablets, programs and other tools). Develop strong merchandising skills to maintain the café presentation and cleanliness of the Café and surrounding floor retail fixtures. Maintain effective visual merchandising to keep counter and floor fixtures presentable. Run a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably. Support the receiving and unpacking of deliveries and subsequent stocking. Make food and drinks properly with accuracy using your knowledge or team guidance and available resources (recipe guides, product spec sheets, etc.). Maintain café cleanliness through daily and weekly cleaning tasks during your shift. Follow FIFO practices and date products accurately. Support the bookfloor team when needed and contribute to loss prevention and de-escalation efforts; identify theft and seek support for issues in the store. Understand and adhere to café safety, hygiene and sanitation guidelines and procedures to maintain standards. Assist with deliveries and collaborate with the wider Cluster as needed. Engage with customers and colleagues with a positive, helpful attitude; demonstrate willingness to learn and grow in barista skills. As you gain experience, anticipate advancement toward the Senior Barista role with additional challenges and growth opportunities. May work in other stores if needed, collaboratively supporting the wider Cluster. Behaviors & Expectations Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts. Fill scheduling gaps when available, being flexible and responsive to store needs (open from early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays). Physical Requirements All work requires physical activity including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting and a lot of walking.
