Major Responsibilities Clinical Practice, Patient Flow, Patient Experience: Lead with high reliability principles with the goal of zero harm; ensure a safe work environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Deploy unit-level nursing resources to implement the nursing process and adhere to standards. Conduct daily patient care rounds; monitor performance of nursing and ancillary staff to achieve safe, cost-effective, quality care. Oversee continuity of nursing assignments to optimize the patient plan of care; ensure nursing process is used for each patient with a care plan for patient and family. Foster a collaborative, patient-focused environment; ensure efficient daily operations, staffing, equipment, supplies, bed/room management, workflow, and productivity. Implement nursing standards, policies, and procedures; hold multidisciplinary rounds for care plan review. Maintain regulatory compliance (e.g., JC, DPH) and unit-based standards in alignment with organizational policies. Demonstrate professional nursing practice and participate in Nursing Staff Organization; contribute to governance and committee work. Coordinate unit huddles to review admissions, patient progression, and discharge plans; report outcomes to the unit director. Accountable for patient experience outcomes in the designated area. Leadership / Management & Human Resources Staffing, scheduling, hiring, and budgeting; assess candidates and make recommendations for hires and other staff changes. Provide orientation and ongoing training; conduct performance reviews and ensure licensing and certifications are current. Ensure documentation for recruiting, onboarding, evaluating, and terminations is complete and timely. Promote diversity and inclusive practice; lead staff development and recognition initiatives; support retention and recruitment. Foster open communication; maintain knowledge of labor laws and union contracts within responsibility areas. Ensure attendance at in-service programs, staff meetings, and unit rounding; measure staff morale and implement improvements. Budgetary Planning and Financial Performance Develop annual departmental budgets based on patient care indicators and projected volumes. Maintain cost-effective staffing and master staffing plans; monitor salaries and supply expenses. Collaborate on capital budgets and educate staff on financial performance. Quality, Safety and Experience Improvements Oversee safety and quality initiatives; conduct rounds and address patient/family concerns. Close Safety Intelligence reports with corrective actions and report Serious Reporting Events (SRE) to leadership. Coordinate clinical quality improvement and safety efforts; manage patient flow and collaboration with medical staff and case management. Lead patient satisfaction initiatives; align with JC, CMS, and nursing quality indicators; support evidence-based practice. Maintain relationships with community groups and promote engagement in line with organizational goals. Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), or BSN with enrollment in an MSN program; completes MSN within 5 years of Nurse Manager employment; Massachusetts RN License. Experience/Skills Broad knowledge of nursing; leadership/management experience; strong interpersonal and communication skills; analytical skills for data and budgeting. Preferred Minimum 3 years of directly related work experience in the field. Physical Demands and Environment Work is moderate with walking, standing, lifting, and potential exposure to infectious diseases. Indoor patient care environment. Uses computer systems (e.g., Onestaff, Visionware, Kronos). Department manages Nursing Services, Social Services and Occupational Therapy on the Geriatric Medical Psychiatry Unit (GMPU).
