Job Overview

Location/Schedule : This position is based at our Woodland Park Health Center, located in NE Portland, OR. The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Position Description: The Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) will work as a member of an interdisciplinary team to provide peer recovery support to individuals with substance abuse and mental health disorders. This position will advocate for the Individuals We Serve (IWS) and support them to pursue their personal goals and individual wellness journey.

The job incumbent must understand, appreciate, and respect the differences within our Cascadia community. As such, it is expected that this position promotes integrated care, our vision of trauma-informed and person-first approaches and helps create a work environment of acceptance.

Essential Responsibilities

General

• Participate in clinical case conferences and staff meetings to enhance knowledge, align with program goals, and advocate for individual needs.

• Serve as an advocate within the organization and with external partners or service providers.

• Demonstrate a recovery‑focused and healthy lifestyle.

• Share personal recovery experiences with IWS when appropriate and supportive.

• Ensure that the needs and voices of IWS being served are represented.

• Link IWS to various recovery support models and community resources.

• Assist IWS in developing a strong, sustainable support network.

• Provide guidance on accessing and navigating community systems such as recovery communities, housing resources, and public transportation.

• Apply Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT) practices as part of service delivery team and in alignment with Cascadia and program’s current level of FIT implementation.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Regulatory & Compliance

• Comply with and implement regulations, policies, and procedures under which the department and program operate.

• Assist in crisis situations as appropriate, following emergency protocols and procedures.

• Understand fire regulations and evacuation procedures; participate in regular safety drills in compliance with department policies and procedures.

• Document and maintain records in a manner that ensures compliance with all agency policies and procedures and local, state, and federal regulations.

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation as required and complete electronic medical records (EMR) as required using Cascadia software.

• Adhere to mandatory abuse reporting laws, HIPAA and 42CFR regulations requirements.

• Complete annual employee training requirements on a timely basis.

• Participate in all scheduled staff meetings, supervision sessions, and other departmental and agency meetings.

Qualifications

Education:

Required:

• A completed Recovery Mentor training approved by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA).

• A Traditional Healthcare Worker (THW) certification which must be kept current and in compliance with the OAR’s.

Experience:

Required:

• Position requires experience as a former or current user of behavioral health services.

• Must self-disclose as being in active recovery from substance addiction and must have personal experience with recovery services.

Preferred:

• Some work experience working with adults with substance abuse challenges.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Effective communication and active listening skills.

• Demonstrated effective interpersonal and customer service skills.

• Ability to demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and initiative in daily work activities

• Knowledge of professional standards, ethical conduct, and accountability expectations in a healthcare environment.

• Understanding of principles related to person‑centered care, safety, and well‑being.

• Ability to work proactively and effectively in a team as well as independently.

• Operate computer hardware and software at a level needed to effectively perform job functions.

Other:

• Possess a valid driver’s license, one-year driving history, clean driving record, ability to pass Driver Motor Vehicle (DMV) check and complete the Cascadia online Defensive Driving course.

• Must have the ability to perform CPR and properly use AED equipment. BLS certification training will be provided within the first 60 days of hire for client-facing staff, and CPR certification training will be provided within 120 days for all other staff. Certification must remain current.

Working Conditions

Environmental: This role is centered on direct IWS and community engagement, it is designed for in-person work and does not include hybrid or remote work options. Work is performed in one or more of the following: administrative office, clinical office, acute care settings and community setting including IWS residences, correctional facilities, shelters, hospitals, public places and other social service sites. Meal periods and breaks are subject to interruption. Universal Precautions and remaining alert to the environment are critical to address the potential for aggressive behavior, exposure to disease, biohazards, noise, and contaminants.

Mental Demands: The work assigned is diverse and involves addressing new and unusual circumstances. The work regularly involves a degree of unpredictability and disruption of planned tasks requiring a flexible time management approach. In addition, this position requires exercising sound judgment.
