Position Purpose and Summary


A clean, safe environment is not separate from the work HTM does - it is part of it. For people who have been living outside, often without access to basic sanitation, walking into a space that is orderly and well-maintained communicates something no intake form can: that they are worth caring for. The Janitor makes that possible.

Reporting to the Program Manager or Assistant Program Manager, the Janitor is responsible for keeping assigned HTM program sites clean, sanitary, and safe. This includes all interior spaces - offices, restrooms, showers, and common areas - as well as the outdoor perimeter. The role also supports site safety by monitoring facility conditions, managing supplies, and reporting maintenance or safety concerns before they become bigger problems.

The people this role serves are living with real vulnerability. That context matters. Keeping a clean environment here is not routine facilities work - it requires reliability, attention to detail, and an understanding of why these standards exist. The dignity of the space reflects the dignity of the people in it.

Responsibilities

Cleaning & Sanitation

• Clean and sanitize all interior spaces daily, including offices, meeting rooms, restrooms, showers, and common areas
• Maintain the exterior perimeter of the property, keeping all areas clear of trash and debris
• Change and remove trash receptacles daily; prepare bins for scheduled weekly pickup
• Assist with sanitizing participant belongings in the hot box during intake as needed

Supplies & Inventory

• Restock bathroom supplies and common area consumables as needed throughout each shift
• Maintain an accurate inventory of cleaning supplies and materials on hand
• Report supply needs to the supervisor in a timely manner, before current stock is depleted
• Store all chemicals and cleaning agents in locked, designated areas in compliance with environmental safety standards at all times

Facility Monitoring & Safety

• Monitor facility conditions throughout each shift and report maintenance concerns or safety hazards to management promptly
• Identify and report any unsafe situations, systems, or processes to the supervisor immediately

General

• Provide janitorial coverage at other HTM sites as needed
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualification

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Prior custodial, janitorial, or general cleaning experience preferred but not required.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently.
• Basic understanding of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
• Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 25-50 pounds as needed.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and use of cleaning chemicals.
• Ability to safely operate basic cleaning equipment (mops, vacuums, floor buffers, etc.).
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining clean, safe environments.
• Ability to manage time effectively and complete tasks within assigned schedules.
• Basic understanding of workplace safety practices.

Mandatory Requirements

• Background Screening - Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of background checks as required per worksite.
• Drug and Alcohol Testing - Candidates must pass pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol screenings in accordance with company policy.
• Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Check - For roles requiring driving, employment is contingent upon an acceptable driving record.
• Legal Eligibility to Work - Candidates must provide proof of legal authorization to work in the US.
• Compliance with Company Policies and HIPAA standards - All employees must comply with company policies, including safety, confidentiality, and conduct standards.

Physical, Demands, Environmental Conditions, Equipment


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The employee is required to: walk and climb stairs; stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis; grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead; handle, finger, grasp and feel objects and equipment; reach with hands and arms; be mobile by moving oneself from place to place quickly and easily; repeat various motions with the wrists, hands, and fingers; be able to perform visual activities for (including, but not limited to) administrative and clerical tasks; ability to lift up to 25 lbs.; communicate, receive and exchange ideas, information by means of the spoken and written word; drive vehicles in and around Los Angeles County; be able to enter various buildings that may require climbing stairs; be periodically subjected to outside environmental conditions. The employee may work in proximity to service animals and emotional support animals; use a desktop and/or laptop computer; various office machines. Complete all required forms in personal writing.


Work Environment

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using alcohol and drugs, and who may not be attentive to basic personal hygiene, health and safety practices. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the participants' use of alcohol and drugs, and lack of personal hygiene. The employee must be ready to respond quickly and effectively to many types of situations, including crisis situations and potentially hostile situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in an office setting. Sometimes work may become stressful when working under pressure or in crisis intervention.
