Summary The Surgical Technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Qualifications To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement (07/24/2026). Applicants may qualify based on experience and/or education as described below: Individual Occupational Requirements: Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal Service; includes utilization of medical instruments, knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery; knowledge of sterile technique, sterilizer operations, and tests; handling of sterile supplies; infection control policies. OR – Education: Applicants may substitute education for experience. Must have completed a full 4‑year bachelor’s degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. Preferred Experience: At least one year as a Surgical Technician. Physical Requirements: Duties require manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies. Must be dexterous in passing instruments without compromising aseptic technique. Duties The Surgical Technician performs the following major duties 100% of the time: Functions as the primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures such as general, vascular, urology, ophthalmology, and major orthopedic surgeries (e.g., total joint replacement). Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure, including air‑powered equipment, fiber‑optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies. Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and ensures all supplies and equipment are available before the procedure. Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical setups. Observes and reacts promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment. Assists team members with patient care – positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies. Handles specimens appropriately. In conjunction with the circulating RN, performs sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy. Is accountable for all surgical instruments and equipment during the procedure. Assists the surgeon by performing such tasks as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures. Prepares prostheses and surgical devices during procedures. Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students, and new OR staff in equipment operation, sterile technique, instrument handling, and OR procedures, including the scrub role. Functions as support personnel for complex surgical procedures. Work schedule: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday‑Friday.
