About the Position

The patient-to-nurse ratio is 5:1 during the day and 6:1 at night. Common diagnoses include neuro, neurosurgery, amputations, multi-trauma, cardiac, and complex medical conditions. Patients may require tracheostomy care, but no ventilator management. RNs will not be required to titrate drips, with the exception of heparin. Telemetry may be present, but it is not monitored by an RN; telemetry packs will be utilized. RNs are required to attend team conferences for acute inpatient rehabilitation. There are house supervisors on the unit; however, no charge nurses are designated. Nurse aides are part of the team with a 1:9 or 1:10 ratio. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy services are available. Respiratory therapy equipment such as CPAP and BiPAP may be utilized primarily at night for sleep apnea. The shift hours are from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM for days and 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM for nights. The schedule requires every other weekend and holiday rotations. Floating to other units such as Long-Term Acute Care or Med-Surg may be necessary, but not to specific units unless training has been completed. Scrub colors are flexible, with specific guidelines regarding t-shirts. Unit-specific orientation includes two days of classroom training followed by two to three days with a preceptor. Familiarity with rehabilitation documentation is essential. The charting system used is EPIC. This is a drug-free campus environment, and a negative drug screen will be required.
