Managing Editor

Phaidon is looking to appoint an exceptional Managing Editor, based in New York. This role will be responsible for the management of the editorial team across Phaidon’s New York, London, and Paris offices, establishing and fostering a highly collaborative and creative workplace culture, mentoring and supporting talent from the most inexperienced to senior levels, and ensuring the smooth running of the department. Working closely with the Publisher and Commissioning Editors, the Managing Editor will be responsible for overseeing editorial assignments and workloads, tracking and maintaining the commissioning pipeline, and helping the team to resolve problems to keep books on time, within budget, and to Phaidon’s exacting standards. In addition to their management role, the successful candidate will also oversee the reprint process and the publication of books into new formats and bindings. In addition, a key part of the role is to act as the central hub of communication between the editorial team and other departments, such as design, production, PR and marketing, and sales, as well as the executive and financial teams. Substantial and proven complex project-management experience is essential, along with first-class communication skills, a dedication to excellence and accuracy, the ability to work calmly under pressure, and a talent for building strong relationships with others. Candidates should have previous experience in book publishing.
