Safety, Health & Environmental Specialist

Primary Responsibilities Support plant-level behaviour-based safety, health, and security processes by providing guidance, leadership, and employee engagement to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and internal Nestlé standards. Support safety training programs to maintain compliance and strengthen employee awareness. Drive efforts related to ISO 45001 , ISO 14001 , and sustainability certification requirements. Assist with accident investigations, review findings and action items with factory leadership, and support hazard assessments, improvement recommendations, and communication of corrective actions. Review investigations related to injuries, near misses, and property damage incidents across upstream and downstream operations. Ensure proper follow-up is completed to reduce future risk exposure and maintain accurate records and documentation. Initiate and evaluate corrective actions when work-related injuries, illnesses, hazards, or unsafe conditions are reported. Support and audit facility standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory reporting requirements. Develop Lockout/Tagout procedures in collaboration with engineering and cross-functional teams. Conduct and review Job Hazard Analyses regularly and provide input on new equipment, production line layouts, and design planning. Coordinate with local emergency agencies and nearby residences to maintain strong relationships and support external communication with interested parties. Support the factory’s emergency management process and emergency preparedness activities. Assist with workers’ compensation administration to reduce claim costs, minimise lost time, and support return-to-work programs. Support environmental sustainability initiatives, including ISO 14001 certification, water and energy conservation, waste reduction, and pollution prevention. Maintain focus on wastewater land application and groundwater discharge operations. Track hazardous and universal waste usage and coordinate disposal activities. Complete MDEQ and EPA environmental reports with supporting records, inspections, and documentation to comply with permit and reporting requirements. Lead zero-waste initiatives and work with campus leadership to develop environmental cost-saving projects. Manage digital tools and create innovative ways to simplify and improve work processes. Develop and conduct training related to safety, health, and environmental responsibilities. Requirements and Minimum Education Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field is required. Relevant professional certifications are an added advantage. Must support and comply with all Nestlé programs and policies, including affirmative action commitments, SHE strategies, corporate citizenship initiatives, GMPs, and safety policies. Must meet requirements related to NQMS and ISO standards for quality, food safety, environmental compliance, and occupational health and safety. Experience 1–2 years of experience in health and safety or a related field within a manufacturing environment. Demonstrated leadership experience. ISO/OHSAS experience and 30-hour OSHA trainer certification are desirable. Strong understanding of federal and state safety and health regulations. Skills Strong decision-making ability in both routine and non-routine situations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds and levels of understanding. Strong training and presentation skills. Ability to work effectively and lead in a team environment. Working knowledge of OSHA and Michigan Workers’ Compensation Law. Technical writing skills for policies, procedures, and reference manuals.
