Position Summary

The Electrical Technician is responsible for the layout, wiring, assembly, inspection, and testing of electrical equipment manufactured by Modular Power & Data. This position works from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, bills of material, and customer specifications to build high-quality electrical products in accordance with MPD standards and applicable safety and quality requirements.

The Electrical Technician is expected to understand not only how to wire equipment, but also how components should be physically laid out, how electrical systems function, and how completed assemblies should be tested and verified prior to shipment.

This is a hands-on manufacturing role requiring strong electrical aptitude, attention to detail, troubleshooting ability, and a commitment to building safe, reliable products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Electrical Layout and Assembly

• Review electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, bills of material, and work instructions prior to beginning assembly.
• Lay out electrical components within enclosures, panels, switchboards, skids, and other electrical assemblies.
• Determine appropriate component placement while considering electrical clearances, accessibility, wire routing, serviceability, and overall workmanship.
• Install electrical components including circuit breakers, disconnects, contactors, relays, terminal blocks, transformers, power supplies, meters, control devices, and other electrical equipment.
• Install wireway, DIN rail, cable supports, grounding components, and other supporting hardware.
• Identify potential drawing, layout, or component conflicts and communicate issues to Engineering or Production leadership prior to proceeding.

Wiring

• Perform point-to-point wiring of electrical equipment in accordance with approved drawings and schematics.
• Cut, strip, terminate, label, and route conductors.
• Install and terminate control wiring, power wiring, communication wiring, and grounding conductors.
• Properly install terminals, ferrules, lugs, connectors, and other electrical termination hardware.
• Route and secure wiring to produce organized, professional, and serviceable electrical assemblies.
• Verify conductor sizes, wire identification, termination locations, and torque requirements.
• Perform equipment grounding and bonding in accordance with applicable requirements.
• Maintain high workmanship standards for wire routing, labeling, termination, and overall equipment appearance.

Electrical Testing and Inspection

• Perform electrical inspections and testing on completed products prior to shipment.
• Conduct point-to-point wiring verification against approved electrical schematics.
• Perform continuity testing.
• Verify grounding and bonding.
• Verify proper electrical connections and component installation.
• Perform torque verification on required electrical connections.
• Perform insulation resistance testing when required.
• Perform dielectric withstand or other electrical testing when required by the product or applicable procedure.
• Energize equipment and perform functional testing when authorized and required.
• Verify operation of breakers, relays, meters, switches, control circuits, indicators, and other electrical devices.
• Verify proper voltage at required test points.
• Troubleshoot wiring errors, component failures, and electrical system issues discovered during testing.
• Document testing results in accordance with MPD quality procedures.
• Ensure identified deficiencies are corrected and properly documented before equipment is released for shipment.

Quality Responsibilities

• Build products in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, work instructions, and MPD quality standards.
• Perform in-process inspections of completed work.
• Identify and communicate discrepancies between drawings, bills of material, and actual equipment.
• Stop work and escalate issues when requirements are unclear or when a potential quality or safety issue is identified.
• Maintain accurate production, inspection, and test documentation.
• Support First Article Inspections and other quality activities when required.
• Participate in root-cause analysis and continuous improvement activities.
• Maintain workmanship consistent with MPD’s ISO 9001 quality management system and applicable UL requirements.

Safety Responsibilities

• Follow all MPD electrical safety and Lockout/Tagout procedures.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Perform energized work or testing only when properly trained, qualified, and authorized.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or potential electrical hazards.
• Follow applicable OSHA, NFPA 70E, and company electrical safety requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical degree, electrical apprenticeship, military electrical training, or equivalent electrical experience preferred.
• Previous experience wiring industrial electrical equipment, switchboards, control panels, machinery, or similar equipment preferred.
• Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and equipment layouts.
• Working knowledge of electrical components and basic electrical theory.
• Ability to safely use electrical test equipment including digital multimeters.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, crimping tools, torque tools, wire-processing equipment, and other electrical assembly tools.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail and workmanship.
• Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with Engineering, Quality, and Production personnel.

Preferred Knowledge and Experience

Experience with one or more of the following is preferred:

• UL 891 switchboards
• UL 67 panelboards
• UL 508A industrial control panels
• Power distribution equipment
• Generator docking stations
• Remote Power Panels (RPPs)
• Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
• Skidded electrical equipment
• Low-voltage power distribution systems
• Electrical controls and instrumentation
• Electrical testing and commissioning

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and work in a manufacturing environment for extended periods.
• Ability to bend, reach, kneel, climb, and work inside or around electrical equipment.
• Ability to safely lift and handle tools, components, wire, and materials required for the position.
• Ability to perform detailed electrical assembly and wiring work using hand and power tools.

Success in This Role

A successful Electrical Technician at MPD can take an engineered design and independently help turn it into a completed, tested product. The technician understands the relationship between the drawing, the physical equipment, the wiring, and the final electrical function of the system.

Success is measured by safety, quality, workmanship, accuracy, productivity, and the ability to deliver equipment that passes final inspection and testing the first time.
