Groundskeeper

Hutchinson Public Schools is looking for a Groundskeeper. This position starts at $16.50 and is commensurate with education and experience.

Maintains grounds of school property by performing the following duties:

∙ Mow lawns.

∙ Trim and edges around walks, buildings, and fences.

∙ Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs.

∙ Spray lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides.

∙ Rake and bag leaves.

∙ Clean grounds, drainage ditches, culverts and removes litter.

∙ Remove snow from walks and driveways.

∙ Spread ice-melt on public passage ways to prevent ice buildup.

∙ Plant grass, trees, and shrubs.

∙ Assist with irrigation needs.

∙ Assist with athletic field preparation.

∙ Repair fences, gates, walls, walks and playground equipment.

∙ Sharpen tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears.

∙ Make minor repairs and maintains equipment such as lawn mower, spreader, and snow removal equipment etc.

∙ Set up for all sporting events as required. Marking sports fields and moving risers, tables, stages etc. for these events.

∙ Haul re-cycled materials to re-cycling center.

∙ Repair and maintains underground sprinkler systems, water reels and irrigation equipment.

∙ Assist in moving teachers, staff and equipment within the district.

∙ May require overtime for snow removal, irrigation leaks and other district emergencies.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. During the summer one to three temporary employees may be supervised by members of the grounds crew.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Driver's license and commercial applicator's license preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
