Mental Health Counselor II PRN

Major Responsibilities Assist in the development and maintenance of a therapeutic milieu and provide a safe environment for all patients. Be proficient in Level I tasks. Take action to intervene with patients who require help with coping skills and self‑control. Respond to emergencies as a member of the team and employ progressive containment skills to manage violent behavior. Facilitate Group Activities Use therapeutic components of group work (installation of hope, universality, giving information, development of social techniques, imitative behavior, etc.) to develop group cohesion. Manage problem behaviors in groups. Lead psycho‑educational groups. Collaborate with Treatment Team Be proficient in Level I tasks. Synthesize assessment data to help develop multidisciplinary treatment plans. Maintain adequate documentation pertaining to the multidisciplinary treatment plan. Utilize Therapeutic Communication Techniques Adapt communication style appropriately to individual patients. Use confrontation and cognitive restructuring to problem‑solve with patients as appropriate. Guide patients through termination of therapeutic relationships under the direction of MHC II or RN. Perform patient education. Assist in development of suicide safety plan. Perform individual counseling to involve patients in their treatment plan through goal setting. Seek supervision for complex communication issues. Assist with Activities of Daily Living Manage patient belongings. Encourage and assist patients in formulating personal care goals. Supervise meals and snacks. Provide or supervise administration of general patient care and safety rounds. Continuing Education Actively participate in continuing education programs as required. Provide orientation to new mental health counselors, nursing care technicians and other disciplines as needed. Education/Experience Required Bachelor's degree in psychology or related field. Demonstrated proficiency for Level I requirements. One year psychiatric experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Therapeutic communication skills for individual and group settings. Advanced computer skills, including Excel, PowerPoint, etc. CPR per hospital policy. Professional Development CPI within 6 months, then yearly. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Therapeutic communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to work closely and harmoniously with a number of individuals on the nursing team. High tolerance for emotionally or physically stressful situations. Ability to anticipate patient and unit needs and implement proper therapeutic measures. Resiliency and flexibility to deal with a changing environment. Demonstrated problem solving ability. Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations. May be exposed to hazardous materials and life‑threatening diseases; knowledge of standard precautions is a must. Works within and supports a shared governance model. Customer‑service focus. Physical lifting capacity: lift up to 100 lbs occasionally or up to 50 lbs frequently; occasionally up to 20 lbs constantly. May interact with violent patients; knowledge of techniques to manage violent patients is required; may be involved in restraining patients. Flexibility to flex hours to meet patient care needs. Ability to handle crisis situations, work weekends, holidays; certain positions may need to take call. Ability to transport objects, patients, and equipment; respond quickly to patient needs and work at a fast pace. Work environment may expose to adverse, hazardous, or unpleasant conditions. Assist in evacuation of patients in the event of fire or other disaster. Routinely work with potentially infectious specimens and patients. Respond to patients promptly and access all unit areas. Additional Lifting Requirements If position has direct patient care or contact, the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement: lift up to 35 lbs without assistance. For patient lifts over 35 lbs, or when patient cannot assist, patient handling equipment is expected to be used with at least one other associate, when available.
