⚠ CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE NEED — CANDIDATES WHO CAN MOBILIZE QUICKLY ARE STRONGLY PREFERRED

This is not routine break-fix work. Our customer is operating under significant network infrastructure constraints across a large, geographically distributed environment. Aging switching equipment is causing cascading connectivity failures — and those physical layer problems are directly bottlenecking a major cloud analytics platform migration. You will be walking into a high-visibility remediation effort where your work has measurable, immediate impact on the organization's ability to deliver services.

Challenges

Our customer operates transit and administrative infrastructure across the entire 7-county Twin Cities metro area. The network environment spans a large number of physical locations — bus garages, maintenance facilities, administrative offices, and transit hubs — each with its own switching infrastructure, many of which have not been refreshed in years.

The immediate problem is hardware: aging and failing network switches and ports are producing packet loss, intermittent connectivity, and outright link failures across the environment. But the downstream consequence is what gives this engagement its urgency:

Physical layer degradation

Failing switches and mis-configured ports are causing packet loss and link instability across transit and administrative sites. Symptoms include intermittent connectivity, slow throughput, and devices dropping off the network without warning.

Distributed scope

Infrastructure spans dozens of locations across the metro area — both indoor server rooms and outdoor/exposed equipment installations. No two sites are identical. You will need to assess, document, and remediate each location on its own terms.

Cloud analytics bottleneck

The customer runs a cloud-based data analytics platform (Azure Databricks) that depends on reliable, low-latency network connectivity between on-premises data sources and cloud infrastructure. Physical network degradation is directly throttling data pipeline performance — shuffle operations time out, executor nodes fail to register, and ingestion jobs queue. Resolving the switching infrastructure is the prerequisite for unblocking the cloud migration.

Coordination complexity

You will work alongside System Engineers who are managing the broader network remediation plan. Communication, documentation, and handoff quality matter — a port replaced without proper documentation creates a gap in the network map that slows down the next technician and the engineers depending on it.

The right candidate for this role understands why physical layer issues cause cloud platform failures, not just how to swap a switch. You do not need to be a cloud architect — but you need to appreciate the chain of impact from a bad port on a 10-year-old switch to a failed Spark job in Azure.

Role summary

RKCS is seeking experienced Network Infrastructure Technicians to support a major regional public-sector customer on a contract basis through December 2026. You will work directly alongside customer System Engineers to systematically replace and upgrade switching infrastructure across the 7-county metro area, diagnose and document connectivity issues, and restore reliable network performance to sites that are currently degraded.

Fully onsite, local role. Remote or hybrid arrangements are not available. You must reside in or near the Twin Cities metro area and be prepared to travel to various customer locations throughout the 7-county region daily. Reliable personal transportation is a hard requirement.

Key responsibilities

• Install and replace physical network switches and ports across transit and administrative locations throughout the 7-county metro area

• Support System Engineers in diagnosing and troubleshooting network connectivity issues — including identifying root causes of packet loss, link instability, and throughput degradation

• Assess site conditions and identify appropriate hardware for each installation prior to transport and deployment

• Document all work performed using photographs, written notes, and shared tracking spreadsheets — accurate documentation is critical to the broader remediation effort

• Communicate power systems, wireless connectivity, and installation issues with the network engineering team in real time

• Safely load, transport, and deliver hardware equipment to job sites using customer vehicles

• Verify all installation steps are completed to standard and confirm link stability before leaving each site

• Collaborate with System Engineers on infrastructure layout, scheduling, and connectivity planning for upcoming sites

• Provide knowledge transfer to other network team members as required

• Escalate anomalies — unexpected hardware configurations, undocumented infrastructure, or unusual connectivity behavior — to the engineering team promptly

Minimum qualifications

All of the following are required to be considered:

• 10 + years of relevant network/IT technician experience’

• Hands-on experience installing and troubleshooting physical network switching infrastructure

• Expertise with physical network performance (packet loss, latency, link speed) affects applications and services that depend on it

• CISCO Certification/s is/are highly desired

• Azure certification is a big plus

Preferred / desired skills

Not required, but candidates with the following will be more competitive and better equipped for this specific engagement:

• Active Cisco certification (CCNA or higher) — understanding of switching, VLANs, spanning tree, and port configuration is directly applicable

• Azure or cloud networking familiarity — particularly understanding of how on-premises network quality affects cloud platform performance (Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, ADLS Gen2, or similar)

• Experience with SolarWinds or similar network monitoring/management tools — useful for verifying link health and identifying degraded ports before and after remediation

• Ability to read and interpret network diagrams, blueprints, and floor plans

• Experience working in distributed, multi-site environments where each site has unique infrastructure configurations

• Familiarity with structured cabling standards and network documentation best practices

• Commitment to clear, consistent documentation

Work environment and physical requirements

• Fully onsite — no remote or hybrid option under any circumstances

• Daily travel across the 7-county Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area; mileage and site assignments will vary

• Work performed in both indoor server rooms and outdoor/exposed equipment locations in all weather conditions

• Physical requirements include lifting, carrying, and installing network hardware and rack equipment

• Must maintain reliable personal transportation throughout the full engagement

• Flexible scheduling may be required based on site access windows and project priorities
