Job Title: Sterile Processing Technician

Classification: Non-Exempt/Hourly

Reports To: Surgical Services Manager

Position Type: Part-Time

Hours Worked/Shift: Monday - Friday

Summary : The role of the Sterile Processing Technician is to assist the staff of the Surgical Department with surgical procedures, washing/testing/inspecting instruments of the facility, cleaning, office duties of the department, and with the various responsibilities of this vital patient care area of the hospital. In general, provides a variety of technical duties within the realm of surgical services at GRMC.

Essential Functions :

1. Demonstrates behaviors consistent with organizational mission & goals.

4. Comes to work as scheduled; arrives for work on time.

5. Demonstrates proper safety practices in carrying out job duties.

8. Complies with organizational policies in course of duties.

9. Demonstrates ability to safely assist patients with transfer, lifting, or rendering aid on the facility campus.

10. Gathers, checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.

11. Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.

12. Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.

13. Review the patient’s chart, identifies patient, verifies surgery to be performed with consent forms, and brings the patient to the assigned operating room.

14. Helps transport the patient to the post anesthesia care unit.

15. Transports patients to and from OR suite; positions patient based upon procedure.

16. Assists with care & maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies.

17. Helps maintain departmental records, reports, and files as is necessary.

18. Properly cleans and prepares rooms between procedures or at end of surgery.

19. Properly cleans, tests, inspects and sterilizes instruments for the facility

20. Maintains proper leave of supplies needed for sterilization and procedures.

21. Assists with GI procedures by cleaning scopes, obtaining specimens, and maintains knowledge of scope tower, usage, cleaning and maintenance.

22. Assists with weekly, and monthly cleaning duties of the unit.

23. Assist with room turnaround between procedures.

24. Attends meetings & training sessions as required.

25. Performs all secretarial duties as requested.

26. Maintains communication lines for department.

27. Willingness to float to additional departments and work within scope of practice.

28. Additional duties as assigned or requested.

Position Qualifications:

Work under the supervision and delegated authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Expert in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique to combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Basic computer knowledge. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Prefer post high school vocational/specialized training in surgical field, however, relevant experience in medical field will also be considered. Prefer candidate be certified as a Surgical Technologist, however, will consider non-certified candidates as well. Experience in surgical field preferred, but will train otherwise qualified candidate.

Minimum Experience: Knowledge of medical terminology required. Experience in peri-operative care preferred.

Certifications/Licensures: Basic Life Support required on hire. Knowledge of medical terminology required. Maintain appropriate certification as a surgical technologist; attend departmental meetings and other hospital meetings as may be appropriate to work at GRMC.

Working Environment : Exposed to blood & other bodily fluids during course of surgical procedures; exposure to sharps before & during surgical procedures a possibility due to nature of work; exposure to a variety of unpleasant elements. Scrubs & other apparel appropriate for surgical work will be provided by GRMC along with appropriate dressing facilities for members of both sexes. Surgical staff are expected at all time to adhere to use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and to observe Standard Precautions in all aspects of job duties.
