Industrial HygienistTo perform technical industrial hygiene activities relating to the identification and evaluation of hazardous exposures to chemical and physical agents, recommendations for and review of hazard control programs and systems and review of and participation in related training activities; and to do related work as required.Receives general instructions from a superior as to policies and objectives, with some latitude for the exercise of independent judgement; work is subject to review for conformance with departmental rules and regulations. Assists in the supervision of the work of a subordinate staff assigned to assist.Illustrative examples of work performed include:Performing technical industrial hygiene activities relating to the identification and evaluation of hazardous exposures to chemical and physical agents, recommendations for and review of hazard control programs and systems and review of and participation in related training activities.Collecting air samples and other appropriate samples, and utilizing direct reading chemical monitors, noise dosimeters, radiation detectors and other types of technical equipment to effectively characterize the exposures of individuals to potential health hazards.Exercising professional judgement in directing the handling of samples and the types of analyses to be performed on samples collected during surveys and inspections; and performing the necessary calculations to properly convert analytical results to meaningful exposure measures.Performing evaluations utilizing complex technical instruments for the testing of ventilation systems, noise abatement systems, radiation shielding and other measures designed to abate hazards; and exercising professional judgement in evaluating the results of this testing for deciding upon the adequacy of control measures.Exercising professional judgement in deciding whether information collected during inspections and surveys constitute violations of industrial hygiene regulations and standards.Recommending specific control measures such as training programs, personal protective equipment, work practice modifications, control ventilation, product substitution and other measures to bring hazardous exposures and conditions within regulatory limits.Preparing appropriate regulatory correspondence and technical reports based on inspection and survey activities, describing the activities involved, outlining the results of any testing performed, suggesting appropriate abatement measures and requiring a reasonable abatement schedule.Maintaining appropriate records of activities and following up on violations to insure corrective actions have been taken.Reviewing for conformance with regulatory requirements technical plans and materials submitted by applicants for various licenses to perform hazardous operations; and reviewing for adequacy the qualifications of individuals applying for certifications as competent to provide certain industrial hygiene services under state statutes.Assisting in the planning and presentation of training programs related to hazardous materials and operations for the public and for individuals seeking specific certifications to perform industrial hygiene functions under state statutes.Providing consultation to the public, employers, employees and others on the specific hazards related to various exposures to chemical and physical agents and the methods for controlling such exposures.Participating in the formulation of regulations addressing industrial hygiene concerns.As directed, testifying before duly constituted bodies regarding the activities which have been supervised or conducted and the professional judgements exercised.Doing related work as required.Required qualifications for appointment include:Knowledges, skills and capacities: A working knowledge of industrial hygiene procedures, regulations and standards and the ability to apply such procedures for the evaluation and control of chemical and physical agent exposure hazards; a familiarity with materials and processes used in industry; the ability to analyze and interpret the results of field and laboratory work; the ability to effectively communicate technically oriented information, both verbally and in writing; the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with representatives of industry, various agencies and members of the public; the ability to prepare and present instructional materials related to industrial hygiene topics; and related capacities and abilities.Education and experience: Education such as may have been gained through graduation from a college of recognized standing supplemented by completion of college courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics and successful completion of training courses in industrial hygiene related topics offered by recognized colleges or nationally recognized training centers for industrial hygiene; and experience such as may have been gained through employment in a technical position conducting inspections and surveys for the determination of industrial health hazards. Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.Review of all asbestos abatement plans; perform inspections on active demolition and renovation worksites; investigate complaints against both asbestos and radon licensed professionals; log key data elements into department database; produce reports needed for grant submission; respond to phone calls and E-mails from members of the public with questions about asbestos and radon; perform state lead inspections as needed when state lead inspectors are not available; audit certification classes for asbestos, radon, and lead; technical review of license applications.
