SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general direction, supervises and coordinates the day-to-day field transportation operations for transporting students to and from school. Assists the Site Managers in organizing, supervising, and managing all facets of pupil transportation in yards. Assists in the management of the transportation yards including awareness of cost control and metric driven performance. Supervises aspects of safety and security compliances, route structures, and development. Assists in the development of supplemental transportation routes, athletic trips, and field trips. Assists in managing site personnel for all staff duties. Incumbent performs related work and duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Field Supervisor provides in the field and onsite front-line supervision of driving personnel, pupil transportation assistants, and onsite support personnel.
  • Investigates complaints related to safety issues, student issues, staff issues, and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Routinely interacts with drivers, parents, and school officials in resolving transportation challenges.
  • Assists drivers with developing possible solutions to pupil management problems.
  • Determines appropriate response to parents and school site staff on transportation related issues.
  • Assists in the daily planning, organization, administration, and evaluation of transportation services to ensure maximum operational efficiency.
  • Conducts performance evaluations for Bus Drivers.
  • Coaches, mentors, and advises Bus Drivers and Pupil Transportation Assistants.
  • Assists with discipline when necessary
  • Monitors and submits time clock/sheet payroll reports for Bus Drivers and Pupil Transportation Assistants.
  • Oversees driver hours of service, discretionary hours, and overtime.
  • Monitors driver adherence to pertinent local, state, and federal laws and regulations including District and department policy
  • Maintains legal documents for drivers, necessary forms, manuals, and supplies.
  • Drivers complete daily vehicle inspections and promptly report any mechanical defects.
  • Provides ongoing in-the-field training for Drivers and Pupil Transportation
  • Performs driver orientation in conjunction with transportation management and administrators.
  • Addresses all compliance report issues or concerns with drivers to include but not limited to, speed, student checks, bus idle, commercial vehicle inspections.
  • Responds to personal injury, vehicle accidents, bus breakdowns, and other emergencies or events.
  • Completes on-scene investigations and prepares / submits corresponding reports to Transportation Department Staff, WCSD Risk Management, School Police, and Administration offices.
  • Rides on routes to observe and monitor Bus Drivers and Pupil Transportation Assistants for student management and student observations, driving safety, and bus safety drills.
  • Assists management in professional development for department staff including PBS (Positive Behavioral Support), monthly safety meetings, and department trainings.
  • Evaluates routes and bus stops for efficiency and safety and submits route change requests as needed.
  • Monitors road conditions during inclement weather and recommends special measures as necessary.
  • May sit on interview committees to interview applicants for vacant department positions.
  • Serves as a bus driver as needed
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination equivalent to education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and experience would be:

Education: Equivalent to a high school diploma.

AND

Experience: Two years of experience, preferably in a school environment, of fleet operations, professional management, or supervisory management. Experience may include customer service, operational procedures, employee relations, performance management, hiring, and training. School transportation operations experience is preferred.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Nevada State Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements, with a driving record acceptable to the District. CPR Certification required.

  • Knowledge of techniques and methods of bus route, scheduling, and design.
  • Knowledge of operating policies, characteristics, and procedures of a school transportation system.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with applicable laws, policies, regulations, and rules affecting school transportation operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office Software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and transportation related software.
Skill and Abilities:
  • Identifying and resolving employees problems; scheduling, preparing, and interpreting reports in a timely fashion.
  • Collecting, assembling, analyzing data, and monitoring data progress.
  • Modifying systems, procedures, and programs within areas of responsibility; exercising discretionary judgment and specialized knowledge in interpreting and applying policies.
  • Effective verbal communication; communicating with precision in grammar, spelling, punctuation, document construction, and editorial enhancement.
  • Prioritizing needs and problems and handling them efficiently.
  • Multitasking and utilizing time management skills; motivating, counseling, and supporting personnel.
  • Overseeing staff; interacting effectively with a wide variety of professional personnel and the general public.
  • Conducting all activities in accordance with the highest ethical standards
