Job Description - HVAC Mechanic (Airport) (240000OP) Position Grade: 36T Department: Airport Job Type: Full-Time (Permanent) Examination Number: EX1384 Location: St. Louis Lambert International Airport Employees assigned to St. Louis Lambert International Airport may be eligible for a commuting allowance of $180.00 bi-weekly. Applicants who meet the minimum experience and training requirements will start at $46,436 annually. Applicants who have successfully completed a bona fide apprenticeship program registered with the Department of Labor and obtained journeyman status will start at $67,522 annually. Proof of completion of a registered Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program and Journeyman status must be submitted at the time of filing the Employment Application or upon request. This position is selected for the Hiring Incentive Program. The incentive shall be in the amount of $1,500.00. The hiring incentive will be paid (if funds are available) by the Department/Division which appoints the applicant. The hiring incentive is not available to current City employees. Incumbents in this position are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing heating, ventilating and air conditioning and refrigerating equipment and systems within St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex mechanical air conditioning, refrigeration systems, heating and ventilating equipment found in commercial and institutional type buildings; air conditioners, heat pumps, gas‑fired hot water boilers, gas furnaces, pumps, air handlers, exhaust air units, make‑up air units, electrical power and control circuits, gas piping, condensate pump and drain lines, fan coil units, condensing units, unit heaters, radiant and fan forced heaters, refrigerated air dryers, and hydronic heating and cooling systems, etc. Must be proficient in using tools and equipment pertinent to the trade. Must be proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, control diagrams, and HVAC equipment, electrical schematic control wiring diagrams. Perform related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Data Utilization: ability to perform basic level of data analysis, review, classify, categorize, prioritize and reference data, statutes and guidelines to recognize relationships. Human Interaction: ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within established policies, procedures and standards; follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: ability to operate, calibrate, tune, synchronize and perform rapid adjustments on equipment, machinery and tools such as control meters, gauges, vacuum pumps, hand and power tools, refrigerant recovery equipment. Verbal Aptitude: ability to utilize work orders, equipment operation logs, schematics, blueprints, parts catalogs, technical manuals, material safety data sheets, procedures and guidelines. Mathematical Aptitude: perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, calculate surface area, percentages, fractions, decimals, basic algebra and geometry. Functional Reasoning: apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions, exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards. Situational Reasoning: exercise judgment, decisiveness, creativity in evaluating information against criteria. Environmental Factors: tasks may risk exposure to adverse conditions (wetness, fumes, temperature extremes, noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic agents). Physical Requirements: moderate physical demands including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling 20–100+ lbs. Sensory Requirements: recognize and identify color‑coded wires, shapes, sounds, odors to detect malfunctioning equipment. Other Requirements Must be available to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. A ten‑year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Qualifications An associate’s degree or completion of a two‑year training program in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating Technology from a recognized trade school or junior college; plus one year of experience in the diagnosis, installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating systems doing commercial and institutional HVAC service and installation work, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Certification: must be certified in EPA Standards at the Universal level (Type I, II and III) for refrigeration handling. License: must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Proof of license must be provided upon application. Scoring Components and Their Weights Experience and Training: 100% May be subject to: Background Investigation (Pass/Fail), Medical Examination (Pass/Fail). City Residence Preference City residents who pass the examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five‑point preference on a scale of 100 points. An additional one point will be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
