Position Overview
We are seeking a Staff Psychiatrist – Inpatient to provide direct psychiatric care to patients within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) at the Skyview Unit in Rusk, Texas.
This is a permanent, direct-hire opportunity offering a structured Monday–Friday daytime schedule, competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and access to Texas public-sector retirement benefits.
The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a secure correctional healthcare environment and providing care to patients with acute and chronic psychiatric conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of assigned patients.
- Conduct psychiatric, physical, and neurological examinations.
- Develop and manage individualized treatment plans.
- Participate in voluntary admission and compelled psychoactive medication proceedings.
- Participate in civil commitment proceedings when required.
- Provide clinical supervision to psychiatric advanced practice providers as assigned.
- Provide emergency psychiatric consultation and participate in rotating after-hours call coverage.
- Participate in Psychiatry Quality Improvement/Quality Management programs.
- Collaborate with medical, mental health, nursing, utilization review, and correctional healthcare teams.
- Maintain appropriate clinical documentation and comply with UTMB/TDCJ policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Schedule
- Monday–Friday
- Day shift only
- 40 hours per week
- 8-hour workdays
- Potential schedules:
- 7:00 AM–4:00 PM
- 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
- 6:30 AM–3:30 PM
- No regular weekend schedule
- No routine night shifts
- After-hours call is performed from home and shared among providers on a rotating basis.
Required Qualifications
- M.D. or D.O. degree.
- Current, unrestricted Texas medical license .
- Eligible for Board Certification in Psychiatry .
- Current DEA controlled-substance registration .
- Completion of an accredited Psychiatry residency program.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required correctional facility security clearance.
- Ability and willingness to work in a secure correctional healthcare environment.
